Certain grave matters have come to our ears, which, since they await canonical correction, we therefore command your Experience that, together with John the notary, all excuse being set aside, you fail not to display the utmost diligence toward Januarius, our brother and fellow bishop, so that, with him present in person, those things which have been brought to us may be sought out by subtle investigation. But as for Pompeiana and Theodosia, religious women, according to their request, if they should be willing to come hither, afford them your support in all things, that they may be able to fulfill their desires by your aiding them;

and especially let it be your care to bring with you in all things the most eloquent Isidore, as he has requested, so that the nature of his case, which he is recognized to have against the Church of Cagliari, being inwardly weighed, may be able to receive a lawful conclusion. Moreover, since certain crimes concerning the person of Epiphanius the presbyter have been reported to us, it is necessary that you investigate all things more diligently, and that you hasten to bring hither likewise either the women with whom he is said to have perished, or others whom you shall have sensed to know anything of the same matter, so that to ecclesiastical strictness the things which are true may be able to be clearly disclosed.

But all these things you shall both take care to fulfill so effectively, that no blame for negligence may regard you, knowing that it altogether pertains to your peril if this precept of ours shall in any way have been slighted.
