234:1
Gregory to Justinus the praetor. The envy of the ancient enemy has this as its peculiar mark, that those whom, with God resisting him, it cannot deceive into the perpetration of wicked deeds, it tears asunder their reputations by feigning falsehoods for the present. Since therefore a sinister rumor had bespattered certain things against the priestly character concerning our brother and fellow-bishop Leo, we caused it to be searched out for a long while by strict inquiry whether they were true, and we found in him no fault of those things which had been said. But lest anything should seem omitted, or a doubt should have been able to remain in our heart, we caused him, out of abundance, at the most sacred body of blessed Peter, to render strict oaths.
234:2
( Vide sup. I. I, rp. 2.)
When these were performed, we rejoiced with great exultation, because by this kind of proof his innocence evidently shone forth. For which reason let your Glory receive the aforesaid man with all charity, and show him the reverence such as befits a priest, nor let any doubt concerning those things which have now been cleared remain in your hearts. But you ought so devoutly in all things to adhere to the above-written bishop, that you may be seen fittingly and becomingly to honor God in the person of him whose minister he is. (See above, book I, letter 2.)
