Gregory to Maurentius, master of soldiers. Because beams are necessary in the churches of the blessed Peter and Paul, we have altogether enjoined upon Savinus, subdeacon, that he ought to cut some in the region of the Bruttii and drag them to a place from which they can be brought hither by sea. But since he cannot rise to accomplish this alone, we have written to Arogis that he should assign the men who are under him, with their oxen, to his aid, promising that when the work is finished we will send him a worthy gift. Let your Glory therefore take pains to send our letter to him with speed by a townsman, which may convey to him what we have written, so that the aforesaid subdeacon may be able to learn his will.
But if he should have departed, a favourable voyage having been found, let your Glory make all things known to him through your own letters, so that he may know what he ought to do; and likewise inform us of what shall have been done.
