Gregorius Felici episcopo Sipontino. Etspectabamus fraternitatem tuam sua aliquos ad Deum praedicatione convertere, et male agentes ad rectitudinem revocare. Qua de re nimis contr!stamur, quia e diverso in nepotis tui Felicis pravitate, tua evidenter, qui talem nutristi, culpa monstrata est. Pervenit a itaque ad nos quod suprascriptus Felix Evangeli tui diaconi filiam, quod nefas est dici, stupro deceperit.
額我略致西彭托主教斐利斯。我們原本期望你的弟兄之情能以講道使一些人歸向天主，並把作惡者召回正途。為此我們深感悲痛，因為恰恰相反，從你姪兒斐利斯的邪惡行徑中，明顯顯出了你這養育他之人的過失。因此有消息傳到我們這裡，說上述的斐利斯竟以一件說出來都可恥的醜行，姦污誘騙了你的執事厄凡革路的女兒。
Gregory to Felix, bishop of Siponto. We had expected that Your Fraternity would by his preaching convert some men to God, and recall evildoers to the right path. On this account we are exceedingly grieved, because, on the contrary, in the depravity of your nephew Felix your own fault has been plainly shown, seeing that you have reared such a man. For it has reached us that the aforesaid Felix has, by an outrage which it is a shame even to name, seduced the daughter of your deacon Evangelus.

Quod si verum est, quamvis b goavi esset de lege poena plectendus, nos tamen aliquatenus legis duritiam mollientes, hujusremodi disponendo præcipimus, ut aut quam stupravit uxorem habeat, aut certe si renuendum putaverit, districtius ac corporaliter castigatus excommunicatusque, in monasterium, ubi paenitentiam peragat, retrudatur, de quo ei nulla sit egrediendi sine nostra præceptione lieentia. Ita ergo fraternitas tua ut haec compleantur studeat, quatenus nihil de Ins aliquo modo possit omitti. Nam si quid, quod non credimus', tentatum fuerit, et illi grave postea periculum imminebit, et te non levis incipiet culpa respicere.
倘若此事屬實，儘管按律法他當受重罰，我們卻在某種程度上緩和律法的嚴厲，藉此命令規定：他或娶他所姦污的女子為妻，或者，若他認為要拒絕，就當受更嚴厲的身體責罰、被逐出教會，並被關進一座修道院去作補贖，未經我們的命令不得擅離。因此願你的弟兄之情盡力使這些事得以完成，好使其中沒有任何一項以任何方式被遺漏。因為若有任何違逆之舉被嘗試——這是我們所不相信的——日後嚴重的危險必臨到他身上，而不輕的過失也將開始歸咎於你。
If this be true, although according to the law he ought to be punished with a heavy penalty, we nevertheless, somewhat softening the severity of the law, ordain by this decree that he either take as wife the woman whom he has ravished, or else, if he think fit to refuse, that he be more strictly and bodily chastised, excommunicated, and shut up in a monastery where he may perform penance, from which he shall have no leave to depart without our command. Let Your Fraternity therefore take pains that these things be carried out, so that nothing of them may in any way be omitted. For if anything be attempted otherwise—which we do not believe—both grave peril will thereafter threaten him, and no light fault will begin to regard you.
