Amarissimas tuæ dilectonis epistolas lIe donni Maximiani obitu a mense Novembiis suscepi. 741 Et quidem ille ad præmia desiderata pervenit, sed infelix populus Syracusanæ civitatis lugendus est, qui pastorem talem diu habere non meruit. Prolade dilectio tua sollicitudinem gerat, ut in eadem Ecclesia talis debeat ad ordinandum eligi, qni post domnum Maximianum ejusdem rcgiminis locum non videatur immerito sortiri. Et quidem credo qnod Traianum presbyterum maxima pars ctigat, qui, ut dicitur, bonae mentis est; sud quantum suspicor, ad regendum locum illum idoneus non est.

Gregory to Cyprian the deacon. Your affection's most bitter letters concerning the death of the lord Maximianus I received from the month of November. And indeed he has attained to the rewards he desired, but the unhappy people of the city of Syracuse are to be lamented, who did not deserve to have such a shepherd for long. Therefore let your affection take up the care, that in the same Church such a man ought to be chosen for ordination, one who after the lord Maximianus may be seen, not undeservedly, to obtain the place of that same governance. And indeed I believe that the greatest part will choose Trajan the presbyter, who, as is said, is of good disposition; but as far as I suspect, he is not suitable to govern that place.

Tamen si melior inveniri non valet, et ipse nullis criminibus tenetur involutus, condescendiadcum, cogente nimia necessitate, potest. Si autem mea voluntas ad hanc electionem quæritur, tibi secreto indico quod volo, quia nullus min eadem Ecclesia post domnum Maximianum tam dignus videtur quam Joannes archidiaconus Catanensis Ecclesiæ. Qui si Geri potest ut eligatur, credo quod apta valde persona inveniatur. Sed ipse quoque prius de crirninibns, quae impedire possunt, a tc secreto I equirendus est. A quihus si fiber inventus fuerit, eligi jure potest. Quod si factum fuerit, etiam frater et coepiscopus noster Leo ei b cessionem facere debebit, ut tiher all ordinandum possit, inveniri.

Nevertheless, if a better man cannot be found, and he himself is not involved in any crimes, one might yield, compelled by extreme necessity. But if my own will is sought concerning this election, I tell you in secret what I wish: that no one in that same Church, after the lord Maximianus, seems to me so worthy as John, archdeacon of the Church of Catania. If it can be brought about that he be chosen, I believe a very fit person will be found. Yet he too must first be secretly inquired of by you concerning any crimes that might be an impediment. If he be found free of them, he may lawfully be chosen. And if this be done, our brother and fellow bishop Leo also ought to grant him release, so that he may be found free for ordination.

These things, therefore, I have taken care to make known to your affection; it will now belong to your solicitude to look carefully into all matters, and to arrange those things which are pleasing to God.
