De a Constantio Aquinæ civitatis episcopo- 293 Vir quoque venerabilis vitæ Constantius Aquinæ civitatis episcopus fuit, qui nuper prædecessoris mei tempore beatæ mem nac b Joannis papae defunctus est. Hunc prophetiae habuisse spiritum multi testantur, qui cum familiariter scire potuerunt. Cujus inter multa hoc ferunt religiosi veracesque viri qui praesentes fuerunt, quod in die obitus sui cam a circumstantibus civibus utpate discessurus Pater tam amabilis amarissime plangeretur, eum flendo requis erunt, dicentes: Quem post te, Pater, habebimus Quibus ipse Pater per prophetiæ spiritum respondit, dicens: Pust Constantin, mulionem; post mulionem, fullonem. 0 te, Aquine,et hoc babes.

Concerning Constantius, bishop of the city of Aquinum. There was also a man of venerable life, Constantius, bishop of the city of Aquinum, who died recently, in the time of my predecessor, John, the pope of blessed memory. That he had the spirit of prophecy many testify, who were able to know him familiarly. Among many things, religious and truthful men who were present relate this of him: that on the day of his death, when he was being most bitterly bewailed by the citizens standing around, as a Father so beloved who was about to depart, they questioned him with weeping, saying: "Whom shall we have after you, Father?" To whom the Father himself replied, by the spirit of prophecy, saying: "After Constantius, a muleteer; after the muleteer, a fuller. Woe to you, Aquinum, you have this too."

Quibus prophetiæ verbis editis, vitæ spiritum exhalavit extremum. Quo defuncto, ejus Ecclesiæ pastoralem suscepit curam Andreas diaconus ilius, qui quondam in stabulis itinerum cursum servaverat equorum. Atque hoc ex hac vita subducte, ad episcopatus ordinem c Jovinus accersitus est, qui in eadem urbe fullo fuerat. Que adhuc superstite, ita cuncti inhabitatores civitatis illius et harbarorum gladiis et pestilentiæ immanitate vastati sunt, ut post mortem illius Rec quis episcopus fieret, nee quibus neret inveniri poLftisset. Sie itaque completa est vKi Dei sententia, quatenus post decessum duorum M sequentium ejus Ecclesia pastorem minime haberet.

Having uttered these prophetic words, he breathed forth his last breath of life. When he had died, Andrew, his deacon—who had once kept the running of horses in the stables along the roads—took up the pastoral care of his Church. And when he too had been taken from this life, Jovinus was summoned to the order of the episcopate, who had been a fuller in that same city. While he yet survived, all the inhabitants of that city were so laid waste, both by the swords of the barbarians and by the immensity of pestilence, that after his death there could be found neither anyone to be made bishop, nor any over whom he might be made. And thus the sentence of the man of God was fulfilled, so that after the death of the two who followed, his Church should by no means have a pastor.
