Gregorius Felici episcopo a Pisaurensi. Miramur fraternitatem vestram, ut serie præcepti neglecta, quod ad vos sanctae memoriæ decessor meus dedera', monasterium a Joanne præsentium portitore constructum, aliter quam antiquae consuetudinis usus eligir, consecrares. Dum etiam in eodem praecepto inter alia mandatum sit ut locum ipsum b absque missis publicis dedicares, et, ut ad nos pervenit, c cathedra posita, sacra illic publice missarum solemnia celebrantur. Quod si verum est, his vos hortamur afJalibus, ut, omni excusatione cessante, cathedram vestram exinde amoveri modis omnibus faciatis, nec denuo illic missas publicas peragatis.

Gregory to Felix, bishop of Pesaro. We marvel at your Fraternity, that, neglecting the tenor of the precept which my predecessor of holy memory had given to you, you consecrated the monastery built by John, the bearer of the present letter, otherwise than the usage of ancient custom requires. Since also in that same precept it was among other things mandated that you should dedicate the place itself without public masses, and, as has come to us, a cathedra having been placed, the sacred solemnities of the masses are publicly celebrated there. And if this be true, we exhort you by these words, that, all excuse ceasing, you cause your cathedra to be removed thence by every means, nor henceforth perform public masses there.

Sed, sicut et consuetudo et praecepti tenor cloquiinr, si missas ibidem sibi celebrari voluerint a te presbyter dirigatur. In eodem autem monasterio congregationem servorum Dei, sicut praedictus joannes et petH et nunc cit, et cum Dei gratia semper volumus permanere. " Calicem vero quem sibi a fraternitate vestra ablatam innotuit, ei, si ita est, restituere festinate. Hæc ergo sauctitas vestra ita studeat adimplere, ut denuo ad nos praedictus portitor pro hac causa necessiLatem remeandi non habeat.

But, as both custom and the tenor of the precept declare, if they wish masses to be celebrated there for themselves, let a presbyter be directed by you. In the same monastery, moreover, we wish the congregation of the servants of God, as the aforesaid John both sought and now seeks, to remain forever, with the grace of God. But the chalice which he has made known was taken from him by your Fraternity—if it be so, hasten to restore it to him. Let your Holiness therefore so strive to fulfill these things, that the aforesaid bearer may not again have necessity of returning to us for this cause.
