296:1
Gregorius Joanni episcopo a Calliopolitano.
Gregory to John, bishop of Callipolis. From the proceedings which Your Fraternity has forwarded to us, it has been found that Andreas, our brother and fellow bishop, has without doubt kept a concubine. But because it is uncertain whether he had to do with her while set in holy orders, it is necessary that you admonish him with careful exhortation, so that, if while placed in holy orders he knows himself to have been mingled with her, he cease from the office in which he is, and by no means presume to minister. But if perchance, conscious of this matter to himself, he suppress his sin and presume to minister, let him know that the peril of his soul threatens him by the divine judgment.
296:2
Cf. Joan. Diac. I. IV, c. 27.)
As for the almswoman whom he caused to be chastised with cudgels—although we do not believe that she died from it after eight months, yet because he caused her to be afflicted in this manner contrary to the order of his own calling—suspend him from the solemnity of the Masses for two months, so that at least this shame may school him as to what sort of man he ought henceforth to show himself. Moreover, upon a petition offered to us concerning those under his charge, the clergy of the aforesaid bishop record that they suffer many evils at his hand. On which account let Your Fraternity take care to learn all things carefully, and so to amend and dispose them in a reasonable manner that no necessity be henceforth imposed upon them of returning hither on this matter. In the month of July, in the second indiction.
