179:1
Gregorius Felici episcopo 8 Sipontino.
Gregory to Felix, bishop of Siponto. It has come to us that the Church of Canusium is so destitute of the office of the priesthood that neither can penance be granted to the dying there, nor baptism be administered to infants. Moved therefore by the burden of this so pious and so necessary a matter, we command your Beloved that, admonished by the authority of this injunction, you should go as visitor to the aforementioned Church, and ought to ordain at least two parochial presbyters; whom, however, you shall have discerned to be worthy of such an office by the reverence of their life and the gravity of their morals, and against whom the constitutions of canonical discipline in no way stand, so that fitting safeguard may be provided for the holy Church.
