Gregory to Sabinianus, bishop of Callipolis. It has been indicated to us that the men of the fort of Callipolis, in which we have appointed you, the Lord being favorable, to be priest, are afflicted with grave vexations from divers persons, and are worn down by long forced-services and many losses. We exhort therefore Your Fraternity that—since that place too is recognized, as is known to all, to belong to our Church—you kindle your solicitude with the zeal of upright defense, and do not permit them to be burdened with unlawful things; for which reason we have also caused copies of the privileges of the Church to be given to you from our archive; so that, informed of all things, you may not be ignorant how you can defend the inhabitants of that place.

We wish also that you should have, under the care of your solicitude, from the coming third indiction, the men of that estate of Callipolis, and that you be most careful in the relieving of their vexations; and, with solicitous care applied, that you carefully ascertain what each one's means are able to furnish out of his rent for the interests of the Church, and dispose each, according to his means, to pay accordingly. Concerning which arrangement let Your Fraternity, having made a careful record, not delay to indicate what the men of the whole estate of Callipolis can give, that we may know what we can, with the Lord's help, dispose thereupon.

And to Sergius the defensor we have directed precepts, that in this matter he should not only not dare to be contrary to you, but rather, where he is able, should supply you with comforts.
