821:1
Gregorius Smaragdo patricio et exarcho. Olim novimus, excellentissime fili, quo desiderio, quave conversione animi, pro a adunanda Dei Ecclesia in Istriae videlicet partibus, zelo Redemptoris nostri, amore aeternae mercedis, studii vestri fervor exstiterit.
Gregory to the patrician and exarch Smaragdus. Long ago we came to know, most excellent son, with what longing, and with what conversion of mind, for the uniting of God's Church — namely in the regions of Istria — the fervor of your zeal has stood forth, out of zeal for our Redeemer and love of the eternal reward. And since this is so, those things which have lately been reported to us concerning those regions, we have not ceased to bring to your notice.
821:2
Firminus siquidem frater et coepiscopus noster, b Tregestinae antistes Ecclesiae, ante adventum vestrae excellentiae salubri consilio ab schismate, quo inha serat, resipiscens, atque ad uniI tem matris Ecclesiae rediens, nostris est epistolis confirmatus, quatenus in vero quem cognoverat sinu matris Ecclesiae, fortitudine animi fixus ac stabilis permaneret. Q.o audito Severus, I Gradensis episcopus, ejusdem caput schismatis, d eum diversis primum coepit, si posset, suasionibus a bono revocare proposito. Quod dum perficere Deo auctore minime valuisset, seditionem illi suorum civium excitare non timuit.
For Firminus, our brother and fellow bishop, prelate of the Church of Trieste, before the coming of Your Excellency, coming to his senses by wholesome counsel from the schism in which he had been entangled, and returning to the unity of his mother the Church, was strengthened by our letters, that fixed and stable in strength of mind he might remain in the true bosom of his mother the Church which he had come to know. When Severus, bishop of Grado, the very head of that schism, heard this, he first began, if he could, to recall him from his good purpose by various persuasions. And when, God being the author, he was in no way able to accomplish this, he did not fear to stir up against him a sedition of that man's own citizens.
821:3
Quanta vero prædictus frarer ft corpiscopus noster Firminus ex eadem immissione pertulerit, plenius illic ac veracius e vicino poteritis agnoscere. Directis itaque excellentiae vestræ jussionibus his qui in Istriae partibus 1241 locum vestrum agere, Deo auctore, noscuntur, districtius jubetote, quatenus et saepedictum fratrem nostrum ab illatis debeant defensare molestiis, et quietem illius multis ad imitandum profuturam modis omnibus procurare; ut hæc vestra provisio et conversorum sit optata securitas, et occasio apta sequentium. Excellentiam quapropter vestram paterno salutantes affectu, petimus ut zeli vestri in hac causa olim exhibiti nunc vehementius fervor incandeat;
我們前述的弟兄及同工主教菲爾米努斯從這同一的煽動中所受的苦楚有多大,你們在當地藉著近旁之人可以更充分、更確實地知曉。因此,請將閣下的命令傳達給那些蒙神為主宰、在伊斯特里亞地區代行你職務的人,嚴厲地吩咐他們,既要保護我們屢次提及的弟兄免受所加給他的騷擾,又要以各樣方法謀求他的安寧——這安寧將使許多人得益、堪為效法的榜樣;使你這樣的措置既成為歸正者所渴望的保障,又成為後來者合宜的契機。故此,我們以父親般的情感問候閣下,懇求你昔日在此事上所顯出的熱心之火,如今更加猛烈地燃燒起來;
How much our aforesaid brother and fellow bishop Firminus has endured from that same instigation, you will be able to learn there more fully and more truly from those near at hand. Therefore, dispatching Your Excellency's commands to those who, God being the author, are known to hold your place in the regions of Istria, order most strictly that they both defend our oft-mentioned brother from the harassments inflicted upon him, and by every means procure his tranquillity, which will profit many for imitation; so that this provision of yours may be both the desired security of the converted and a fitting occasion for those who follow. Wherefore, greeting Your Excellency with fatherly affection, we ask that the fervor of your zeal, once shown in this cause, may now more vehemently blaze up;
821:4
tantoque vos con'ra hostes Dei vindices defensoresque reperiant, quanto apud Deum pretiosior eat animae quam defensio corporis. Armet vos contra devios ipsa quæ in vobis fidei viget rectitudo, redintegretur vestris temporibus quod in illis est partibus scissum corpus Ecclesiae. Habetis in hac causa retributorem vestri operis, rectitudinis ac integritatis auctorem. De divina namque miseratione confidimus quod tanto exteriores hostes nostri valentiores vos contra se reperient, quanto vos inimici rectae fidei divino in se senserint amore terribiles. Praeterea duas e ad Cillanem epistolas misimus, si pacem quae ab excellentia vestra in triginta diebus facta est custodiret;
願他們發覺你越發成為對抗神之仇敵的伸冤者與捍衛者,正如靈魂在神眼中比保護身體更為寶貴。願那在你裡面興旺的信德之正直,武裝你去抵擋那些走入歧途的人;願那在那些地區被撕裂的教會身體,在你的時代得以修復。在此事上你有你勞苦的賞賜者,正直與純全的創始者。因為我們深信神的憐憫:我們外邦的仇敵越發覺得你對他們有能力,正如正信的仇敵因神聖的愛而覺得你對他們可畏。此外,我們已寄了兩封信給契拉,看他是否會遵守閣下所立、為期三十日的和約;
and may they find you so much the more avengers and defenders against the enemies of God, in proportion as the soul is more precious in God's sight than the defense of the body. May that very rectitude of faith which flourishes in you arm you against those who go astray; may that be restored in your times which in those regions is a torn body of the Church. You have in this cause the rewarder of your labor, the author of rectitude and integrity. For we trust in the divine mercy that our outward enemies will find you the more powerful against them, the more the enemies of the right faith perceive you to be terrible toward them through divine love. Moreover, we have sent two letters to Cilla, in case he should keep the peace which was made by Your Excellency for thirty days;
821:5
and he wrote back that he would keep it, provided however that it be kept toward him by the parties of the republic. As for those men whom he had held, he released them all together with their goods. But over his men who were slain he grieves greatly, and he is vehemently suspicious of you, because if—which God forbid—he finds an opportunity, there is no doubt that he will break out even during the peace. To the Pisans, however, we long ago sent our man, such as we ought and in the manner we ought; but he was able to obtain nothing. Whence their swift galleys have already been reported ready to set out.
