402:1
Gregorius Cypriano diacono rectori Siciliæ. Lilybetanæ clerus Ecclesiæ huc pro ordinando sibi vcniens sacerdote, licentiam eis de exquirendo sibi epiacopo nos dedisse cognoscas. a Qui reperientes Decium forensem presbyterum, sibi eum consecrari multis precibus poposcerunt, quorum petitionem necessarium duximus adimplere. Et ideo dilectio tua in omnibus ei solatiari non negligaL; ut, qua b Theodorus qnondam ejusdem Ecclesiæ episcopus dereli. quit plurima quae emendari debeant, tuo in omnibus adjutus auxilio, dumtaxat æquitate servata, causarum 802 inquietudinibus liberior, in Dei laudibus possit existere.
Gregory to Cyprian, deacon and rector of Sicily. Know that when the clergy of the Church of Lilybaeum came here to have a priest ordained for themselves, we granted them license to seek out a bishop for themselves. Finding Decius, a priest of the town, they besought with many prayers that he be consecrated for them, and we judged it needful to fulfil their petition. And therefore let your Charity not neglect to assist him in all things; so that, aided in all things by your help, with equity nevertheless preserved, being freer from the disturbances of lawsuits, he may be able to devote himself to the praises of God concerning the many things which Theodorus, once bishop of that same Church, left behind that ought to be amended.
