Sed dum nimia te facit stultitia negligentem, non solum de illis offendimur, sed etiam ad ulciscendam desidiam tuam nihilominus provocamur.

Gregory to Sergius the defender. Had you been a man, or had you possessed any strictness, you ought to have proved yourself so a guardian of regular discipline that you would correct by punishment those things which are unlawfully committed there before their report reached us. But since excessive folly makes you negligent, we are not only offended concerning those matters, but are likewise provoked to avenge your sloth.
