352:1
Gregorius Felici episcopo a Sardica.
Gregory to Felix, bishop of Sardica. In what manner obedience or reverence is to be shown to those set over you, you yourself do not doubt from your own subordinates. In which matter it is very useful, if what the vigor of discipline imposes, humility, deserving of praise, should preserve with no one compelling it. It has come to us, therefore, that Your Fraternity disdains to obey, according to custom, John our brother, bishop of the First Justiniana, and has been unwilling to subscribe, according to custom, either to his decree or to the report which he sent to us. If this is so, we are grieved, because you give a manifest sign of pride in yourself. And how blameworthy that is, especially in a priest, the utterances of the divine admonition cry aloud.
352:2
Therefore we exhort you that, laying aside the swelling of your mind, you cease not to show yourself humble and obedient to your aforesaid ordainer, our brother and fellow bishop, so that both God may rejoice in the concord of your Fraternity, and others may take from you an example of goodness. For if, which we do not believe, it should befall you to persist in pride, know that we, as an avenger of your obstinacy, shall impose the strict and canonical correction of discipline. Well therefore do you act, to offer yourself of your own accord, by wholesome consideration, such as you would be compelled to be by the demand of canonical constraint.
352:3
Nam nec tibi denno post nostram admenitionem licebit ad tuae voluntatis arbitrium contra morem majoribus tuls inobedicutem existere, nec tantae tius indisciplinationis ecclesiastieam cognoscas dissimulare vel differre vindiclalu.
For it will not be lawful for you again, after our admonition, to be, according to your own will's judgment, disobedient to your superiors contrary to custom, nor should you think that the ecclesiastical vengeance for so great an indiscipline may be dissembled or deferred.
