Gregorius Constantio episcopo Mediolanensi. Quamvis ita fraternitas vestra convenienli sibt gravitate discreta sit, ut non admonita, sed ex se quid cui sit impendendum intelligat, verumtamen quia lator praesentium Joannes, vir magnificus, qui praefecturae vices illic acturus advenit, nostra se petiit epistola commendari, sanctitas ei vestra, dum necesse fuerit, salva ratione praesidium sui favoris impendat, et ila eum sacerdotaliter suis studeat. solatiis adjuvare, quatenus vobis praesentibus nec aliorum debeat injuste oppressionibus laborare, nec ipse aliis contra rationem gravis existat.

Although your fraternity is discerning with a gravity befitting itself, so that even unadmonished you understand of yourself what ought to be extended to each, nevertheless, because the bearer of the present letter, John, a magnificent man, who has come to act there in the office of the prefecture, has asked to be commended by our letter, let your holiness, when it shall be necessary, with reason preserved, extend to him the aid of your favor, and strive so to assist him in priestly fashion with your comforts that, with you present, he may neither have to labor unjustly under the oppressions of others, nor himself be burdensome to others contrary to reason.
