Gregorius Candido episcopo de urbe veteri. Cum percussio corporalis (Grat. q. 1, c. 2), « utrum pro purgalione, an pro vindicta contingat, Dei in hoc 574judicium ignoratur, non debet a nobis addi flagellatis afflictio, ne nos culpae, quod absit, offensa respiciat. Et quia præsentium lator Calumniosus pro hac percussione quam sustinet consueta sibi commoda ab Ecclesia vestra asserit negari, itlcirco fraternitatem tuam praesenlibus hortamur epistolis quatenus nil eum ad percipienda quae consueta sunt, hæc ægritudo b debeat impedire, quia diversis in Ecclesia militantibus, varia, sicut nosti, saepe conlingit infirmitas.

Gregory to Candidus, bishop of the old city (Orvieto). Since, when a bodily stroke falls, whether it happen for purgation or for vengeance, God's judgement in this is unknown, no affliction ought to be added by us to those who are scourged, lest the offence of guilt, which God forbid, should regard us. And because the bearer of these presents, Calumniosus, asserts that on account of this stroke which he suffers the accustomed comforts are being denied him by your Church, therefore by these present letters we exhort your Fraternity, that this sickness ought in no way to hinder him from receiving the things that are customary, since, as you know, to those who serve in the Church in diverse ways, various infirmity often befalls.

Et si hoc fuerint exemplo deterriti, nullus de caetero qni Ecclesiae militet poterit iuvcniri, sed secundum loci ejns ordinem quæque ei, si sanus esset, poterant ministrari, de ipsa exiguitate, quae Ecclesiæ potest accedere, fraternitas tua divini contemplatione judicii ægrotanti praebere non desinat, quatenus in hujus rei administratione ad eleemosynam potius videaris quæ sunt Consueta exsolvendo convertere. And if they shall be deterred by this example, none henceforth who serves the Church will be able to be found; but according to the order of his place, whatever things could have been ministered to him if he were healthy, let your Fraternity, out of that very slenderness which can accrue to the Church, in contemplation of the divine judgement, not cease to furnish to the ailing man; so that in the administration of this matter you may be seen rather to convert to alms the customary things by paying them out.
