Quanto apostolica sedes (Grat. dist. 63, c. 10), Deo auctore, cunctis prælata constat Ecclesiis, tanto i iter multiplices curas, et illa nos valde sollicitat, ubi ad consecrandum antistitem Dostrum exspectatur arbitrium a. Defuncto igitur Laurentio Ecclesiæ Mediolanensis cpiscopo, sua nobis relatione clerus innotuit in electione se filii nostri Constantii, diaconi sul, unanimiter consensisse Sed quon,am eadein non fuit subscripta relatio, ne quid quod ad cautelam pertinet omittamus, hujus idcirco 6&6 præcepti aui toritate suffultum v Genuam te proficisci necesse est.

Gregory to John the subdeacon. Inasmuch as the Apostolic See is established, God being its author, above all Churches, so much the more do manifold cares beset us, and that matter greatly troubles us, wherein our judgment is awaited for the consecrating of a bishop. Since, then, Laurentius, bishop of the Church of Milan, has died, the clergy has made known to us by their report that they have unanimously consented in the election of our son Constantius, their deacon. But because that same report was not signed, lest we omit anything that pertains to caution, it is therefore necessary for you, supported by the authority of this precept, to set out for Genoa.

And because many of the Milanese, driven by barbarian ferocity, are settled there, you must, having called them together, examine their wishes in common. And if no disagreement separates them from the unity of the election—if indeed you ascertain that the wishes and consent of all persist in our aforesaid son Constantius—then cause him to be consecrated by his own bishops, as the custom of antiquity requires, with the assent of our authority, the Lord assisting; so that, this custom being thus observed, both the Apostolic See may retain its own vigor, and may not diminish the rights it has granted to others.
