Gregorius a clero, ordini et plebi consistenti b Crotonae. Vestri antistitis obitum cognoscentes, curae nobis fuit destitutæ Ecclesiae visitationem fratri et coepiscopo nostro c Joanni solemniter delegare. Cui dedimus in mandalis ut nihil de provectionibus clericorum, reditu, ornatu, ministeriisque a quoquam usurpari patiatur. Cujus vos assiduis adhortationibus obedire convenit, dquatenus in ecclesiastico officio sacerdos exquiratur qui et a venerandis. canonibus nulla discrepet e ratione.
額我略致居於克羅托內的聖職人員、聖秩團與信眾。得知你們主教之逝世，我們已慎重地委派我們的弟兄兼同僚主教若望，去巡視這座因而失去牧者的教會。我們囑咐他，不容任何人侵佔關乎聖職人員的晉升、收入、裝飾或職務之事。你們理當順從他不斷的勸勉，好使在此教會職分上，能尋得一位在任何方面都不違背可敬教規的司鐸。
Gregory to the clergy, the order, and the people residing at Croton. Learning of the death of your bishop, we have taken care to delegate solemnly to our brother and fellow-bishop John the visitation of the Church thus left destitute. To him we have given it in charge that he suffer nothing concerning the promotions of clerics, the revenue, the ornaments, or the ministries to be usurped by anyone. It becomes you to obey his constant exhortations, so that in the ecclesiastical office there may be sought out a priest who differs in no respect from the venerable canons.

Nam non solum talem ad episcopatus apicem 602 nulla ratione provehendum, veram etiam * vos nullis intercessionibus veniam promereri posse cognoscite: sed omnes quos ex vobis de laica persona aspirasse constiterit, ab officio et a communione alienos faciendos orocul dubio noveritis. And when he has been requested, let him come to us to be ordained, with the solemnity of a decree confirmed by the signatures of all and accompanied by the visitor's document, taking care above all things not to elect a lay person of whatever life or merit. For know that not only is such a person by no means to be advanced to the summit of the episcopate, but also that you yourselves can obtain no pardon by any intercessions: rather know beyond doubt that all among you who shall be shown to have aspired on behalf of a lay person are to be made estranged from office and from communion.
