It behoves us to lend a benevolent ear to those who ask just things, so that both the petitioners may find the remedies they hope for, and the Church may not lack a shepherd's solicitude. And since the Church of Tanate, in which your Fraternity was formerly adorned with priestly honour, has, through the deeds of sinners, been so occupied and destroyed by the ferocity of the enemy that no hope of returning thither has remained—in the Church of Saona, which has now for a long time been destitute of the aid of a pontiff, we by this authority appoint you, according to the manner of your petition, without doubt its cardinal priest.
