Gregory to Malchus, bishop of Dalmatia. John, a most eloquent man, counsellor of the most excellent man the lord George, prefect throughout Italy, has intimated to us that he has disputes concerning certain business matters against Stephen, bishop of the city of Scodra, and has petitioned that a judgment ought to be held between him and the bishop. Therefore we have taken care that your Fraternity be admonished by the present injunction, that you compel the aforesaid bishop to come to a chosen tribunal. And whatever between the aforesaid John, a man of great worth, and the oft-mentioned bishop shall be determined by the sentence of the chosen judges, do not fail to carry into effect, so that both the plaintiff may give thanks for the justice obtained,

and the one arraigned, when he is brought to trial, may complain of nothing against himself concerning injustice inflicted. Gregory to Anthemius, subdeacon. When you departed we gave you charge, and afterwards I remember to have enjoined it by precepts sent from time to time, that you should take care of the poor. And if you should come to know any there in want, you were to indicate it by letters sent back; and you have taken care to do this concerning but few. But I wish that, as soon as you receive the present order, you offer to my lady aunt Pateria forty solidi for the shoeing of her boys, and four hundred measures of wheat. To the lady Palatina, widow of Urbicus, twenty solidi, and three hundred measures of wheat. To the lady Viviana, widow of Felix, twenty solidi, and three hundred measures of wheat.

Let all these eighty solidi together be charged to your accounts. But bring the sum total of the rent-payment with haste, and, with the Lord's help, be present on the Paschal day. (Cf. John the Deacon, book II, ch. 55.)
