549:1
Gregorius Juliano scriboni.
Gregory to Julian the notary. If in secular offices their proper order and the discipline handed down by our forebears is preserved, who could bear that ecclesiastical orders should be thrown into confusion by rash presumption, that what is heard should be neglected, and that things needing correction should be put off by an ill-advised leniency? And indeed you do well to cherish charity and to urge men toward concord. But since, out of regard for our own office, we are compelled by no means, for God's sake, to leave unexamined those matters that have come to our knowledge, therefore we have taken care, when Maximus came, to inquire subtly of him into the things that have been said concerning him.
549:2
And we trust in the guardianship of our Creator that, once the truth is known, we shall not be turned aside from the standing of the canons and the rectitude of equity, neither by favour toward anyone nor by anyone's fault, but shall gladly keep what accords with reason. For if — which God forbid — we neglect the ecclesiastical care and vigour, sloth ruins discipline, and the souls of the faithful will surely be harmed while they receive such examples from their own pastors. But as for what you write, namely that the will of the palace and the people's love of it are not at variance with him, this matter does not call us back from our zeal for justice, nor does it make our intention fail by sinning in the search for truth. One must therefore strive, magnificent son, that each man may win for himself the love of God.
549:3
Nam sine divina gratia bumana dilectio quid dicam in posterum, dum modo quoque apud nos amplius nocet b ?
For without divine grace, what shall I say that human love profits hereafter, when even now among us it does the greater harm?
