Felix vir a memorandus suis nobis epistolis questus est fraternitatis vestræ actionarios possessiones quas tenuerat illicite et contra juris ordinem pervasisse, petens ablata sibi restitui, et se cum eis, si tamen causam voluerint dicere, paratum esse in judicio sine aliqua dilatione consistere. Quod si ita est, quia quid legalis ratio habeat non nescitis, oportet ut, omni mora postposita, actores vestra: Ecclesiæ deputetis, ut cum eo debeant eligere cognitores, b qui tam imminentis quam principalis rci quaestionem cognoscere valeant et finire;

Gregory to John, bishop of Syracuse. Felix, a man to be remembered, has complained to us in his letters that the agents of Your Fraternity have unlawfully and against the order of law seized possessions which he had held, asking that what was taken from him be restored, and that he is ready, if only they are willing to plead the cause, to stand in judgment with them without any delay. If this is so, since you are not ignorant of what legal reason requires, it behoves you, all delay set aside, to appoint the proctors of your Church, so that they may choose judges together with him, who may be able to hear and settle the question both of the pending matter and of the principal one;

ne si qualibet occasione dilatum fuerit, et ipse pati præjudicium, et partes Ecclesiæ non habere justitiam videantur. lta ergo agite ut sub omni celeritate judicium eligatur. 942 Nam nos sic causas Ecclesiae vestræ fieri volumus, ut nec dispendium contra æquitatem sustineat, nec ad vestram c possit aliquid invidiam sustinere.
免得若因任何緣故被拖延，他顯得蒙受損害，而教會一方又顯得不得公義。所以你當如此行事，使審斷得以極速選定。因為我們願你教會的案件如此辦理，使它既不違背公平地蒙受損失，也不致招來任何有損你名譽之事。
lest, if by any occasion it be deferred, both he seem to suffer prejudice, and the party of the Church seem not to have justice. So act, therefore, that with all speed a judgment be chosen. For we wish the causes of your Church so to be conducted that it neither sustain loss against equity, nor be able to sustain anything to your discredit.
