432:1
Gregorius Joanni episcopo Syracusano. Quamvis causa fucrit quae fraternitatis vestræ animos ad iracundiam non immerito provocarct, ut nec oblationes domni Venantii voluissetis suscipere, pec in domo ipsius sacra missarum sineretis solemnia celebrari, tamen quia ita terrena agi debet utilitas, ut nullum nos jurgium a charitatis valeat connexione dhjuogere, proinde sanctitatem vestram, sicut dudum scripsimus, adhortamur, quatenus et oblationes ame dicti vir i omnimodo in dulcedine et Deoplacita debeatis sinceritate suscipere, et in domo ipsius missarum peragi mysteria permiUatis;
額我略致敘拉古主教若望。縱然或許有某種緣由,並非無理地激動閣下的心至於發怒,以致你不願收受溫南提烏斯大人的奉獻,也不肯容許在他家中舉行彌撒的神聖禮儀——然而,因為屬世的利益當如此處理,使任何爭端都不能將我們從愛德的聯繫中割離,因此我們勸勉閣下,正如我們不久前所寫的:你既當以全然的甘美、以蒙天主喜悅的真誠收受前述之人的奉獻,也當容許在他家中舉行彌撒的奧蹟;
Gregory to John, bishop of Syracuse. Although there may have been a cause which not undeservedly provoked the spirit of your Fraternity to wrath, so that you were unwilling to receive the offerings of the lord Venantius, nor would you allow the sacred solemnities of the masses to be celebrated in his house—nevertheless, because earthly advantage ought so to be handled that no quarrel may avail to sever us from the bond of charity, therefore we exhort your Holiness, as we wrote a while ago, that you ought both to receive the offerings of the aforesaid man in all sweetness and in a sincerity pleasing to God, and to permit the mysteries of the masses to be performed in his house;
432:2
so that, as we wrote, if perchance he shall wish it, you ought to go through your own person, and by celebrating masses with him, to restore the former grace. For it behooves you to bestow a sacerdotal affection upon sons, and in causes, according as reason supports it, in no way to pass over the jurisdiction of your Church. Considering this therefore, it is necessary that your Fraternity so strive to conduct yourself toward them with discreet moderation, that you may both salubriously carry out what the quality of the business demands, and not withdraw from the grace of paternal charity.
