Substantiam prodit, sed tamen corpus ejus protegit, quod quidem postmodum tentatori traditurus est; sed tamen non simul ad omnia relaxat hostem, ne undique feriens frangat civem. Mata enim cum multa electis eveniunt, mira conditoris gratia ex tempore dispensantur;

Verse 12. — 'Behold, all that he has is in your hand; only do not stretch out your hand against him.' God permits the tempter some things and denies him others. — In the words of the Lord we must consider the arrangement of His holy tenderness: how He both permits our enemy and holds him back, both slackens his rein and restrains it. Some things He gives him for our testing, but from other things He binds him off. 'All that he has is in your hand; only do not stretch out your hand against him.' He gives up Job's substance, yet He protects his body, which indeed He is afterward going to hand over to the tempter; yet He does not at once release the enemy against everything, lest by striking on every side he should crush His citizen. For when many afflictions befall the elect, by the wondrous grace of the Creator they are apportioned according to the season,

Hinc Paulus ait: Fidelis Deus, qui non patietur vos Tentari f supra id quod potestis, sed faciet cum tenta- tione etiam exitum, ut possitis sustinere ( I Cor. x, 13)· Hinc David ait: Proba me, Domine, et tenta me ( Psal. xxv, 2). Ac si aperte dicat: Prius vires inspice, et tunc ut ferre valeo, tentari permitte. Hoc tamen quod dicitur; Ecce universa, qua habet, in manu tua sunt, tantum in eum ne extendas manum tuam, intelligi et (??)liter potest, quia fortem quidem pugnatorem suum Dominus noverat, sed tamen dividere ei certamina contra hostem volebat;
這樣，若合在一起會使人喪命的，分散開來便能承受了。故此保羅說：「神是信實的，必不叫你們受試探過於所能受的；在受試探的時候，總要給你們開一條出路，叫你們能忍受得住」（哥林多前書十13）。故此大衛說：「耶和華啊，求祢察驗我，試煉我」（詩篇二十六2）。彷彿明明地說：先察看我的力量，然後照我所能承受的容許我受試探。然而「看哪，凡他所有的都在你手中，只是不可伸手加害於他」這句話，也可以另一種方式理解：主固然知道祂的勇士剛強，卻仍願意將他與仇敵的爭戰分開來，
so that what, heaped together, would destroy, may, when divided, be borne. Hence Paul says: 'God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that you are able, but will with the temptation also make a way of escape, that you may be able to bear it' (1 Cor. 10:13). Hence David says: 'Prove me, O Lord, and try me' (Ps. 25:2) — as if he plainly said: First examine my strength, and then permit me to be tempted according to what I can bear. Yet this saying, 'Behold, all that he has is in your hand; only do not stretch out your hand against him,' can also be understood in another way: for the Lord knew His warrior indeed to be strong, yet He willed to divide for him the contests against the enemy;

ut quamvis robusto bellatori victoria in cunctis suppeteret, prius tamen de uno certamine hostis ad Dominum victus rediret: tuncque ei aliud iterum vincendo concederet, quatenus fidelis famulus eo mirabilius victor existeret, quo victus bostis se contra illum iterum ad nova bella repara- ret Sequitur:
這樣，雖然對如此強健的戰士而言，凡事都必得勝，仇敵卻要先在一場爭戰中戰敗，回到主面前；然後主再容許另一場爭戰讓他去勝過。如此，這忠僕便更奇妙地顯為得勝者——因為那戰敗的仇敵一再重整旗鼓，向他發動新的爭戰。接著說：
so that although victory in all things would be at hand for so robust a soldier, yet the enemy should first return to the Lord vanquished from one single contest; and then the Lord would grant him another to be conquered again, in order that the faithful servant might emerge victor the more marvelously, the more the vanquished enemy would gird himself anew against him for fresh wars.
