V ers. 27.— Operuit faciem ejus crassitudo. 50. Terrenarum rerum abundantia oculos claudente. — Visus quippe in facie est, in qua et prima corporis honorabilior pars est. Non ergo immerito mentis intentio per faciem designatur, quam qu(??) bet ver- timus, illuc videmus. Faciem ergo crassitudo operit, quia desiderata terrenarum rerum abundantia oculos mentis premit, et hoc quod in eis esse honorabile debuit, ante Dei oculos foedat, quia curis multiplici- bus aggravat. Quibus tamen nec solum sufficit ut ipsi superbiant, nisi et hi qui eis conjuncti sunt de eorum pinguedine etiam ipsi glorientur.

Verse 27.—Fatness covered his face. 50. On the abundance of earthly things closing the eyes.—Sight is indeed in the face, in which also is the more honourable part of the body. Not without reason, therefore, is the intention of the mind designated by the face, since wherever we turn it, thither we see. Fatness, then, covers the face, because the longed-for abundance of earthly things presses down the eyes of the mind, and that which ought to have been honourable in them it befouls before the eyes of God, since it weighs them down with manifold cares. To such men it is not enough merely that they themselves be proud, unless those also who are joined to them likewise glory in their fatness.
