787:1
I bid. — Et elevabis ad Deum faciem tuam. 25.
In the same place. — And thou shalt lift up thy face to God. To lift up the face to God is to raise the heart, cleansed by penitence, to the investigation of divine things. — To lift up the face to God is to raise the heart to the investigation of sublime things. For just as we are known and discernible to man by the face of the body, so we are known and discernible to God by the interior image. But when we are pressed down by the guilt of sin, we are afraid to lift up to God the face of our heart. For while it is supported by no confidence of good works, the mind trembles to gaze upon the highest things, because conscience itself accuses it.
787:2
But when the guilt is washed away by the laments of penitence, and things committed are so bewailed that things to be bewailed are by no means committed, great confidence is born in the mind, and the face of our heart is lifted up to behold the joys of the heavenly recompense. But Eliphaz would say these things rightly if he were admonishing a weak man. When, however, on account of the scourges he despises a just man, what else does he do but pour out, in ignorance, the words of knowledge? Which words, indeed, if we bring them to the type of heretics, they themselves, with false promises, promise that we shall lift up our face to God. As if they plainly said to the faithful people: So long as thou followest not our preaching, thou pressest down thy heart among weak things.
787:3
Quia vero Eliphaz beatum Job ad Deum reverti admonuit, a quo videlicet idem'vir beatus nunquam recessit, adhuc pollicendo sub- jungit:
But because Eliphaz admonished blessed Job to return to God — from whom, indeed, that same blessed man never departed — he still, in making promises, subjoins:
