I bid.— Occupet eum caligo, et involvatur amaritu- dine. 10. Quid nunc patiatur, et quid passurus sit post judicium.—Antiquus hostis nequitiae suae vinculis astrictus, aliud est quod nunc patitur, aliud quod in fine patietur. Quia enim a lucis intimae ordine ceci- dit, nunc semetipsum intrinsecus erroris caligine confundit. Sed post hoc amaritudine involvitur, quia ex merito spontaneae caliginis aeterno gehennae tor- mento cruciatur. Dicatur ergo: Is qui serenitatem lucis intimae perdidit, quid est quod ante extremum supplicium tolerat? Occupet eum caligo. Subjungatur etiam, quae illum poena subsequens etiam sine ter- mino devastate: Involvatur amaritudine.
同節。「願幽暗抓住它，願它被苦楚纏裹。」十、他現今所受的，與審判之後所要受的。那古蛇，被自己邪惡的鎖鏈捆綁，現今所受的是一回事，末了所要受的又是另一回事。因為他從至內之光的次序墜落，如今就在內裡以錯謬的幽暗使自己混亂。但此後他被苦楚纏裹，因為按著他自願選擇之幽暗的應得，他要受地獄永刑的折磨。故此可說：那喪失了至內之光之寧靜的，在末後刑罰之前所忍受的是甚麼呢？「願幽暗抓住他。」再加上那隨後而來、甚至無窮無盡地毀滅他的刑罰：「願他被苦楚纏裹。」
The same. 'Let gloom seize it, and let it be wrapped in bitterness.' 10. What he now suffers, and what he will suffer after the judgment. The ancient enemy, bound by the chains of his own wickedness, suffers one thing now and another at the end. For because he fell from the order of the inmost light, he now confounds himself inwardly with the gloom of error. But after this he is wrapped in bitterness, because by the merit of his self-chosen gloom he is tormented with the eternal torment of hell. Let it therefore be said: He who lost the serenity of the inmost light, what is it that he endures before the final punishment? 'Let gloom seize him.' And let there be added also what penalty, following, lays him waste even without end: 'Let him be wrapped in bitterness.'

Omne quippe quod involutum est finem suum quasi nusquam indi- cat; quia sicut non ostendit quo incipit, ita non de- tegit quo desistit. Involvi ergo amaritudine antiquus hostis dicitur, quia superbiae ejus supplicia non solum omnimoda, sed etiam infinita praeparantur. Quae vi- delicet ejus poena tunc initium accipit, cum districtus ad extremum judicium judex venit. Unde et bene subditur: V ers. 6.— Noctem illam tenebrosus turbo possideat. 11. Quanta tempestate ad aeterna supplicia raptus. — Scriptum quippe est: Deus a manifestus veniet, Deus noster, et non silebit. Ignis in conspectu ejus ardebit, et in circuitu ejus tempestas valida ( Psal. xʟix, 3).
因為凡被纏裹的，都彷彿無處顯明其終結；正如它不顯出何處起始，也不揭露何處止息。故此說那古蛇被苦楚纏裹，因為他驕傲的刑罰所預備的不僅是各樣的，更是無窮的。這刑罰確實在那嚴厲的審判者來施行末後審判時開始。所以又恰當地加上說：第六節。「願幽暗的旋風佔據那夜。」十一、他被何等的風暴捲往永刑。因為經上記著說：「我們的神要顯明地來，並不靜默。有烈火在他面前吞滅，有暴風在他四圍大颳」（詩四十九3）。
For everything that is wrapped up shows its end as though nowhere; for just as it does not display where it begins, so it does not disclose where it ceases. The ancient enemy is therefore said to be wrapped in bitterness, because the punishments of his pride are prepared not only in every kind but even infinitely. This penalty of his indeed takes its beginning when the strict Judge comes to the final judgment. Whence it is also well added: Verse 6. 'Let a dark whirlwind possess that night.' 11. With how great a tempest he is snatched to eternal punishment. For it is written: 'God will come manifestly, our God, and He will not keep silence. A fire shall burn before Him, and round about Him a mighty tempest' (Psalm 49:3).

A dark whirlwind therefore possesses this night, because that dreadful tempest snatches the apostate spirit from the presence of the strict Judge to eternal punishments. This night is therefore possessed by a whirlwind, because his proud blindness is struck by strict retribution. There follows:
