I bid. Ambulabunt in vacuum, et peribunt. 38. Transitoriis bonis inhiantium vacuus labor. In vacuum quippe ambulant qui nil secum de fructu sui laboris portant. Alius namque adipiscendis hono- ribus exsudat, alius multiplicandis facultatibus aestuat, alius promerendis laudibus anhelat; sed quia cuncta haec hic quisque moriens deserit, labores in vacuum perdidit, qui secum ante judicem nihil tulit. Quo contra bene per legem dicitur: Non apparebis in conspectu Domini vacuus ( Exod. xxiii, 15). Qui enim promerendae vitae mercedem bene agendo non providit, in conspectu Domini vacuus apparet. Hinc de justis per Psalmistam dicitur:

同一節。「他們必徒然行走，並且滅亡。」第38段：那些貪戀短暫之物者的空虛勞苦。因為凡不帶著自己勞苦果實的人，都是徒然行走。因為有一人為得尊榮而流汗，另一人為增添資財而煎熬，另一人為博取稱讚而喘息；但因這各人一死，便把這一切都撇在此處，那在審判者面前一無所帶的人，便徒然喪失了自己的勞苦。因此藉律法說得好：「你不可空手朝見上主」（出二十三15）。因為凡未藉行善預備那當得之生命之賞的人，便空手朝見上主。因此藉聖詠作者論到義人說：

Same verse. 'They shall walk in vain, and shall perish.' 38. The empty labor of those who gape after transitory goods. For they walk in vain who carry with them nothing of the fruit of their labor. For one man sweats for the attaining of honors, another seethes for the multiplying of resources, another pants for the earning of praises; but because each of these, dying, forsakes all these things here, he has lost his labors in vain, who carried nothing with him before the Judge. Whereto it is well said through the Law: 'You shall not appear empty in the sight of the Lord' (Exodus 23:15). For he who by acting well has not provided the reward of the life to be earned, appears empty in the sight of the Lord. Hence it is said of the just through the Psalmist:

Venientes autem venient in exsultatione, portantes manipulos suos ( Psal. cxxv, 6). Ad examen quippe judicii portantes manipulos veniunt qui in semetipsis recta opera qui- bus vitam mereantur ostendunt. Hinc de unoquoque electo Psalmista iterum dicit: Qui non accepit in va- num animam suam ( Psal. xxiii, 4). In vanum nam- que animam suam accipit, qui, sola praesentia cogi- tans, quae se sequantur in perpetuum non attendit. In vanum animam suam accipit qui, ejus vitam uegli- gens, ei curam carnis anteponit.

「他們必歡呼著前來，攜帶自己的禾捆」（詠一二五6）。因為凡在自己身上顯出那可賺得生命之正行的人，便攜帶著自己的禾捆前來受審判的細察。因此聖詠作者又論到每一位蒙揀選者說：「他沒有徒然領受自己的靈魂」（詠二十三4）。因為凡只思念眼前之事、不留心那將永遠隨著他之事的人，便是徒然領受了自己的靈魂。凡忽略靈魂之生命、反把肉體的顧念置於其上的人，便是徒然領受了自己的靈魂。

'But coming they shall come with exultation, carrying their sheaves' (Ps. 125:6). For to the scrutiny of judgment they come carrying their sheaves who show forth in themselves the right works by which they may earn life. Hence again the Psalmist says of each of the elect: 'Who has not received his soul in vain' (Ps. 23:4). For he receives his soul in vain who, thinking only of present things, does not attend to the things that will follow him for eternity. He receives his soul in vain who, neglecting its life, prefers to it the care of the flesh.

336:3

Sed animam suam justi in vanum non accipiunt, quia intentione conti- nua ad ejus utilitatem referunt quidquid corporaliter operantur, quatenus et transeunte opere, operis cau- sa non transeat,, quae vitae praemia post vitam parat. Sed haec curare reprobi negligunt, quia profecto, ambulantes in vacuum, vitam sequentes fugiunt, in- venientes perdunt. Melius vero a pravorum imitatio- ne compescimur, si eorum damna ex fine pensamus. Unde bene etiam cum exhortatione subjungitur:

但義人並非徒然領受自己的靈魂，因為他們以持續不斷的心意，把自己身體所行的一切都歸給靈魂的益處，以致縱使工作消逝，工作的緣由卻不消逝，那緣由在今生之後預備了生命之賞。但惡人卻疏於顧念這些事，因為他們必然徒然行走，逃避自己所追求的生命，在尋得之際反失去它。但我們若從惡人的終局衡量他們的損失，便更能被攔阻，不去效法他們。因此也帶著勸勉恰當地接著說：

But the just do not receive their soul in vain, because with continual intention they refer to its profit whatever they do bodily, so that even when the work passes away, the cause of the work may not pass away, which prepares the rewards of life after life. But the reprobate neglect to care for these things, because assuredly, walking in vain, they flee the life they follow, and lose it in finding it. But we are better restrained from imitating the wicked, if we weigh their losses by their end. Whence it is well subjoined also with exhortation:
