Sed eo verae simplicitatis inno- centiam deserunt, quo ad virtutem rectitudinis non assurgunt; quia dum cauti esse per rectitudinem ne- sciunt, nequaquam innocentes persistere per simpli- citatem possunt. Hinc est quod Paulus discipulos ad- monet dicens: Voto vos sapientes esse in bono, sim- plices autem in malo ( Rom. xvi, 19). Hinc rursum dicit: Nolite pueri effici sensibus, sed malitia parvuli estote ( I Cor. xiv, 20). Hinc per semetipsam Veritas discipulis praecipit, dicens:

The same place. — Simple, and upright. 2. Job's simplicity and uprightness. Both are necessary. — For some are so simple that they know not what is right. But they forsake the innocence of true simplicity in that they do not rise up to the virtue of uprightness; for while they know not how to be prudent through uprightness, they can in no wise remain innocent through simplicity. Hence it is that Paul admonishes his disciples, saying: 'I would have you wise unto that which is good, but simple concerning evil' (Rom. xvi, 19). Hence again he says: 'Be not children in understanding, but in malice be ye children' (1 Cor. xiv, 20). Hence Truth by Himself commands His disciples, saying:

Estote prudentes sicut serpentes, et simplices sicut columbae ( Matth, x. 16). Utraque enim necessario in admonitione conjunxit; ut et simplicitatem columbae astutia serpentis in- strueret, et rursum serpentis astutiam columbae sim- plicitas temperaret. Hinc est quod sanctus Spiritus praesentiam suam hominibus, non in columba solum- modo, sed etiam in igne patefecit ( Matth. iii, 11, 16). Per columbam quippe simplicitas, per ignem vero zelus indicatur. In columba igitur, et in igne osten- ditur ( Act. ii, 3): quia quicunque illo pleni sunt, sic mansuetudini simplicitatis inserviunt, ut contra culpas delinquentium etiam zelo rectitudinis accendantur. Sequitur:
「你們要靈巧像蛇，馴良像鴿子」（馬太福音十章16節）。因為祂在勸戒中必然地將二者聯合在一起；好使蛇的靈巧教導鴿子的純樸，反過來鴿子的純樸調和蛇的靈巧。故此聖靈向人顯明祂的臨在，不僅在鴿子中，也在火中（馬太福音三章11、16節）。因為藉鴿子表明純樸，藉火則表明熱心。因此，祂在鴿子中並在火中顯現（使徒行傳二章3節）：因為凡被祂充滿的人，如此服事純樸的溫柔，以致他們也因正直的熱心而向犯罪者的過失燃燒。接下來說：
'Be ye prudent as serpents, and simple as doves' (Matt. x, 16). For He joined both together of necessity in His admonition; that the cunning of the serpent might instruct the simplicity of the dove, and again the simplicity of the dove might temper the cunning of the serpent. Hence it is that the Holy Spirit made His presence manifest to men not in the dove only, but also in fire (Matt. iii, 11, 16). For by the dove simplicity, but by the fire zeal is signified. In the dove, therefore, and in the fire He is shown forth (Acts ii, 3): because whosoever are full of Him so serve the meekness of simplicity, that they are also kindled with the zeal of uprightness against the faults of transgressors.
