18. Sancti Deo suam sapientiam tribuunt, superbi sibi. — Sic beatus Job loquitur verbis suis, ut aliquid signet ex nostris. Nam sancta Eccle ia docens, in quantum cogn scere expedit, nihil veritatis abscondit. Quia enim manus Dei vocatur Filius (Omnia quippe per ipsum facta sunt (Joun. I. 5), per manum Dei docere se perhibet eos quos in propria sapientia remanere fatuos videt. Ac si aperte dicat: Ego ex me aliquid nescio; sed quidquid de veritate sentio, hoc ex ejusdem Veritatis largitate comprehendo. Vos idcirco recta non sapitis, quia hanc eamdem vestram sapientiam non Dei manui, sed vobismetipsis datis.
十八、聖徒將智慧歸於神，驕傲者歸於自己。——如此，有福的約伯以自己的話語說話，好指明某些關乎我們的事。因為聖教會在教導時，凡有益於知曉的真理，一無隱藏。因為聖子被稱為神的手（萬物確是藉著祂造的（約翰福音一章3節）），故藉著神的手，祂顯明祂教導那些祂看為在自己智慧中仍作愚昧人的人。彷彿祂明明地說：「我憑自己一無所知；然而凡我對真理所領會的，都是我從那同一真理的慷慨中領受的。你們之所以不明白正道，乃因你們把這你們自己的智慧歸給自己，而非歸給神的手。」
18. The saints attribute their wisdom to God, the proud to themselves. — Thus blessed Job speaks with his own words, so as to signify something concerning us. For holy Church, in teaching, hides nothing of the truth, in so far as it is expedient to know. For because the Son is called the hand of God (indeed all things were made through Him (John 1:3)), through the hand of God He shows that He teaches those whom He sees to remain fools in their own wisdom. As if He plainly said: 「Of Myself I know nothing; but whatever I perceive of the truth, this I grasp from the bounty of that same Truth. You therefore do not savour what is right, because you give this very wisdom of yours not to the hand of God, but to yourselves.」

Nam hostes sanctæ Eeclesiæ, si quid veri aliquando sentiunt, id propriis 565 viribus tribuunt; et tanto magis se privant superna sapientia, quanto illain quasi ex suo ingenio habere privatam volunt. Quibus aliquando dalur ad juficium suuin a ut recte quidem aliqua sciant, sed ex ipsa hac scientia obligatiores ad poenam fiant. Unde apte subditur:
因為聖教會的仇敵，若有時領悟某些真理，便將之歸於自己的能力；他們愈想憑自己的才智把那智慧當作己有的私產，就愈使自己被剝奪那屬天的智慧。對這等人，有時容許他們得著知識，反成為他們受審判的緣由：他們固然正確地知曉某些事，卻正因這知識而更當受罰。故此恰當地補充說：
For the enemies of holy Church, if at times they perceive something true, they attribute it to their own powers; and by so much the more do they deprive themselves of heavenly wisdom, by how much they wish to possess it as it were their own private property from their own genius. To such, sometimes, it is granted for their judgement that they may indeed know some things rightly, but from this very knowledge become more liable to punishment. Whence it is fitly added:
