Verse 17.—That he may turn man away from the things he has done, and deliver him from pride. By compunction we are turned from sins previously committed, and are delivered from pride.—For what has man made of himself but sin? And it is written: The beginning of all sin is pride (Sir. 10:15). Well therefore is it said that when man is turned away from the things he has done, he is delivered from pride. For to be proud against the Creator is to transgress his precepts by sinning, because he shakes off, as it were, from himself the yoke of his dominion, whom he disdains to be subject to through obedience.
