Verse 8. — Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth? 42. Until Christ should come, of whom again the sayings about Job are explained. He took on the humility of the flesh without injury to His majesty. By His virtues He repressed the pride of the devil. — That Job is interpreted 'grieving,' we said a little before. And He is truly called grieving under a figure, who is testified by the Prophet to bear our griefs. To whom there is none like on the earth, because every man is only a man, but He Himself is both God and man. There is none like Him on the earth, because although every adoptive son advances to receive divinity, he nevertheless in no way receives it so as to be God by nature.

He is also well called a servant, because He did not disdain to take on the form of a servant. Nor did He inflict injury on His majesty by the humility of the assumed flesh; because, in order both to take on what was to be preserved and yet not to change what He possessed, He neither diminished the divine by the human, nor consumed the human by the divine; because although through Paul it is said: Who, though He was in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant (Phil. 2:6-7), for Him to have emptied Himself is to have shown Himself visible from the greatness of His invisibility, so that the form of a servant might veil that which uncircumscribed penetrated all things out of His divinity. But for God to say to Satan under a figure: Have you considered my servant Job?

is to show the only-begotten Son admirable against him in the form of a servant. For by that means, by which He made known that Son of such great virtue in the flesh, He as it were pointed out to the proud adversary something that, grieving, he might consider. But since He had brought forward the good thing at which he might marvel, it remains that, to repress his pride, He should add by further enumerating His virtues. There follows:
