CAP. XXXIV, VERS. I. — I Pronuntians quoque E liu, etiam hæc locutus est. 38. Justi ex radice humilitatis loquuntur; secus ini qui. — Quid enim per hujus pronuntiationis vocabulum, nisi inflatio elationis ostenditur, ut verba, quæ de alta superbiæ radice veniebant, cum'quadam quasi altitudine et distinctione procederent. Ita videlicet praedicare omnes arrogantes solent? Cum quodam enim fastu proferunt hoc quod singulariter intellelisse se credunt; et fortasse tunc humilitatem prædicant, cum per elationis typhum exempla superbiæ ostentant. Unde fit ut eorum praedicatio concors sibi manere non possit, quia id quod rectum loquentes seminant, perverse tumentes impugnant.

Chapter 34, Verse 1. — Elihu therefore, continuing his discourse, spoke also these things. The righteous speak from the root of humility; the wicked otherwise. — For what is shown by the term of this 'pronouncing,' except the inflation of elation, so that the words which came from the deep root of pride might proceed with a certain, as it were, loftiness and distinctness? For thus indeed are all arrogant men wont to preach: for with a certain pomp they utter that which they believe they alone have understood; and perhaps they then preach humility while, through the pride of elation, they display examples of pride. Whence it comes about that their preaching cannot remain consistent with itself, because that which, speaking rightly, they sow, they, swelling perversely, assail.

Humilibus namque auditoribus verba sua non compatiendo, sed vix dedigaando largiuulur. Longe quippe se in altucn positos aestimant, et super eosdem auditores suus g quasi praecedentes doctrinae respectum vix de summo dignanter inclinant. At contra verba justorum ex radice veniunt humilitatis, ut fructum valeant ferre pietatis: et quidquid salubre potuerint, non tumendo, sed compatiendo subministrant. b Per verba quippe charitatis vel se in auditoribus suis I vel auditores suos in se ita transformant, ac si et illi per istos hoc quod audiunt doceant, et isti per illos hoc quod docendo proferunt discant.
因為對謙卑的聽眾，他們賜下自己的話語並非出於同情，乃是幾乎出於輕蔑。因為他們自視高高在上，彷彿走在那些聽眾之前，幾乎不屑從其高處俯下他們教導的顧念。但相反，義人的話語從謙卑的根而出，好使它們能結出敬虔的果子；他們凡能給予的有益之物，都不是憑膨脹，而是憑同情施予。因為藉著愛心的話語，他們如此將自己轉化入聽眾中，或將聽眾轉化入自己中，彷彿雙方都藉著他們教導自己所聽的，而這些人又藉著他們學習他們教導時所發出的。
For to humble hearers they bestow their words not by fellow-feeling, but scarcely by disdaining. For they esteem themselves placed far on high, and, as though preceding those same hearers, they scarcely deign from their summit to incline the regard of their teaching. But on the contrary, the words of the righteous come from the root of humility, that they may be able to bear the fruit of piety; and whatever wholesome thing they have been able to give, they administer not by swelling but by fellow-feeling. For through the words of charity they so transform either themselves into their hearers, or their hearers into themselves, as if both these should teach through them that which they hear, and these should learn through them that which by teaching they utter.
