28. — Habitabit in civitatibus desolatis, et in domibus desertis, quae in tumulos sunt redactae. 52. Ille vicissim dum sibi conjunctorum laudibus extollitur, ad prava opera vehementius rapitur.— Quia enim a conversatione conviventium civitas ap- pellatur, civitates desolatae sunt ipsi obsequentium cunei perversorum, quorum clamoribus perversus iste laudatur cum ad prava opera per nequitiam ra- piatur. Unde scriptum est: Laudatur peccator a in desiderio animae suae, et qui iniqua agit benedicitur ( Psal. x, 3, sec. Hebr.). Domus vero desertae sunt cogitationes pravae, quas iniquus iste inhabitat, quia per omne quod agit iniquorum hominum plac(??)re co- gitationibus appetit.
28.——他要住在荒涼的城邑中，住在荒廢的房屋裡，就是那已成為廢堆的。52. 他反過來，當因與他相聯之人的稱讚而被高舉時，就更劇烈地被擄去行邪惡之事。——因為城邑既是從共同居住之人的往來得名，這荒涼的城邑就是那些邪惡跟從者的群隊，這邪惡人藉其惡行被擄去行邪惡之事時，便因他們的喧嚷受稱讚。故此經上記著說：惡人因心願自誇，行不義的人反被祝福（詩篇十3，按希伯來文）。而荒廢的房屋，就是這惡人所居住的邪惡思念，因為他藉所行的一切，尋求討惡人思念的喜悅。
28.—He shall dwell in desolate cities, and in deserted houses, which have been reduced to heaps. 52. He in turn, while he is exalted by the praises of those joined to him, is more vehemently carried off to depraved works.—For since a city is named from the intercourse of those who dwell together, the desolate cities are the very bands of perverse followers, by whose clamours this perverse man is praised while through wickedness he is carried off to depraved works. Whence it is written: The sinner is praised in the desires of his soul, and he who does unjust things is blessed (Ps. x, 3, according to the Hebrew). But the deserted houses are the depraved thoughts which this wicked man inhabits, because through everything that he does he seeks to please the thoughts of wicked men.

These are rightly named desolate cities and deserted houses, because unless Almighty God, on account of their preceding faults, abandoned the conversations and thoughts of such men, they would by no means arrive at the perpetration of graver deeds. Well, moreover, is it said: Which have been reduced to heaps. For the falling buildings of houses and cities make heaps, since when the depraved by confused actions join themselves to one another for perverse works, they show beyond doubt that they have fallen from the edifice of life.
