I bid. — Loquar in amaritudine animae meae. 67. Confessio fiat in amaritudine animae. — Qui culpas suas detestans loquitur, restat c necesse est ut has in amaritudine animae loquatur, ut haec ipsa ama- ritudo puniat quidquid lingua per mentis judicium accusat. Sciendum vero est quia ex poena poeniten- tiae, quam sibi mens irrogat, aliquatenus securitatem percipit, atque ad interrogationem superni judicis fidentior exsurgit, ut semetipsam subtilius inveniat. et erga se quaeque quomodo disponantur agnoscat. Unde et protinus additur:

Let confession be made in bitterness of soul. — He who speaks while loathing his own faults must of necessity speak these things in the bitterness of his soul, so that this very bitterness may punish whatever the tongue accuses through the mind's judgment. But it must be known that from the penalty of penance which the mind inflicts upon itself, it in some measure receives assurance, and rises up more confident at the interrogation of the heavenly Judge, so that it may find itself more subtly, and may recognize how each thing is disposed concerning itself.
