I bid. — Deridetur enim justi simplicitas. 48. Quid sapientia hujus mundi. Quid sapientia justorum. Cur a mundo rideatur. — Hujus mundi sa- pientia est, cor machinationibus tegere, sensum verbis velare, quae falsa sunt vera ostendere, quae vera sunt a fallacia demonstrare. Haec nimirum b pru- dentia usu a juvenibus scitur, haec a pueris pretio discitur, hanc qui sciunt caeteros despiciendo super- biunt; hanc qui nesciunt, subjecti et timidi in aliis mirantur, quia ab eis haec eadem c duplicitas iniqui- tatis, nomine palliata, diligitur, dum mentis perver- sitas urbanitas vocatur.

Ibid. — For the simplicity of the just is derided. 48. What is the wisdom of this world. What is the wisdom of the just. Why it is laughed at by the world. — The wisdom of this world is to cover the heart with machinations, to veil the sense with words, to show what is false as true, to demonstrate what is true as falsehood. This prudence, indeed, is known by the young through practice, this is learned by boys at a price; those who know it despise others and grow proud; those who know it not, subject and timid, admire it in others, because by them this same duplicity of iniquity, cloaked under a name, is loved, while perversity of mind is called urbanity.

Haec sibi obsequentibus prae- cipit honorum culmina quaerere, adepta temporalis gloriae vanitate gaudere, irrogata ab aliis mala mul- tiplicius reddere, cum vires suppetunt nullis resisten- tibus cedere, cum virtutis possibilitas deest, quidquid explere per malitiam non d valet, hoc in pacifica bonitate simulare. At contra sapientia justorum est nil per ostensionem fingere, sensum verbis aperire, vera ut sunt diligere, falsa devitare, bona gratis ex- hibere, mala libentius tolerare quam facere; nullam injuriae ultionem quaerere, pro veritate contumeliam e lucrum putare. Sed haec justorum simplicitas deri- detur, quia ab hujus mundi sapientibus puritatis vir- tus, fatuitas creditur.

This wisdom instructs those who obey it to seek the heights of honors, to rejoice in the vanity of temporal glory obtained, to repay in manifold measure the evils inflicted by others, to yield to none who resist when strength suffices, and, when the possibility of power is lacking, to feign in peaceable goodness whatever it cannot accomplish through malice. But on the contrary, the wisdom of the just is to feign nothing by outward show, to open the sense by words, to love true things as they are, to shun false things, to exhibit good things freely, to endure evils more willingly than to do them, to seek no vengeance for injury, to count reproach for the sake of truth as gain. But this simplicity of the just is derided, because by the wise of this world the virtue of purity is believed to be folly.

Omne enim quod innocenter agitur, ab eis procul dubio stultum putatur; et quid- quid in opere veritas approbat, carnali sapientiae fa- tuum sonat. Quid namque stultius videtur mundo quam mentem verbis ostendere, nil callida machina- tione simulare, nullas injuriis contumelias reddere, pro maledicentibus orare, paupertatem quaerere, pos- sessa relinquere, rapienti non resistere, percutienti alteram maxillam praebere? Unde bene hujus mundi dilectoribus ille egregius Dei sapiens dicit: Abomi- nationes Aegyptiorum immolabimus Domino Deo nostro ( Exod. viii, 26). 361 Oves quippe Aegyptii edere dedignantur;

For everything that is done innocently is by them without doubt accounted foolish; and whatever truth approves in a work sounds foolish to carnal wisdom. For what seems more foolish to the world than to show the mind by words, to feign nothing by cunning machination, to repay no insults for injuries, to pray for those who curse, to seek poverty, to relinquish things possessed, not to resist him who plunders, to offer the other cheek to him who strikes? Whence well does that eminent wise man of God say to the lovers of this world: We shall immolate to the Lord our God the abominations of the Egyptians (Exod. viii, 26). For the Egyptians disdain to eat sheep;

sed quod abominantur Aegyptii, hoc Israelitae Deo offerunt, quia simplicitatem conscien- tiae, quam injusti quique velut infimam abjectamque despiciunt, hanc justi in virtutis sacrificium vertunt; et excolentes recti puritatem ac mansuetudinem Deo immolant, quam abominantes reprobi fatuitatem putant. Quae nimirum justi simplicitas breviter, sed sufficienter exprimitur, cum protinus subinfertur.
