1376:1
56. How great a commotion threatens from the signs and powers of Antichrist. — Which we shall better expound if we first investigate how sneezing comes about. For in sneezing an inflation is stirred up from the breast, which, when it does not find the pores open for it to flow out, strikes the brain, and, being gathered together and going out through the nostrils, forthwith shakes the whole head. In this body of Leviathan, therefore—that is, whether in the malignant spirits or in the reprobate men who have cleaved to him through likeness of iniquity—an inflation, as it were, rises from the breast, while pride raises itself up out of the power of the present world. Which, as it were, does not find the pores for flowing out, because in this—that against right it lifts up its mouth—by God's disposing it is prevented from prevailing as much as it desires.
1376:2
Exsurgens auten) cerebrum tangit et concutit, quia collecta elatio Satanae sensum in fine mundi b arctius percuLit, et caput turbat, dum ipsum auctorem malignorum spirituum per eum qui Antichristus dicitur in persecutione fidelium vehementius excitat. Tunc congesta inflatio per ejus nares egreditur, quia tota superbiae ejus iniquitas apertis malitiæ flatibus demonstratur. Quia ergo sternutatio caput maxime concutit, Leviathan istius i ternutatio vocatur illa ejus extrema commotio qua damnatum hominem iogrediLur, et per eum reprobis principatur. Qui tanta tune virtute se commovet, ut membra DOloini, si potest fieri, etiam eiecta perturbet;
但它挺起來時觸動並震撼腦部,因為撒但積聚的驕傲在世界末了更尖銳地衝擊人的心智,並攪擾那頭,因為牠藉那稱為敵基督者,在逼迫信徒之時更猛烈地激動那惡靈之元凶本身。那時,積聚的氣從牠的鼻孔而出,因為牠驕傲的全部罪孽藉惡意公然的噴發顯露出來。既然打噴嚏尤其震動頭,這利未雅坦最後的那震動——牠藉此進入那被定罪之人,並藉他轄制被棄者——便稱為牠的『噴嚏』。牠以何等大的能力鼓動自己,甚至若可能,連主的選民肢體也要攪擾;
But rising up it touches and shakes the brain, because the gathered pride of Satan more sharply strikes the sense at the end of the world, and disturbs the head, when it more vehemently stirs up the very author of the malignant spirits, through him who is called Antichrist, in the persecution of the faithful. Then the gathered inflation goes out through his nostrils, because the whole iniquity of his pride is displayed by the open blasts of malice. Since therefore sneezing especially shakes the head, that last commotion of this Leviathan, by which he enters into the condemned man and through him rules over the reprobate, is called his 'sneezing.' Who then moves himself with such power that he may, if it can be done, disturb even the elect members of the Lord;
1376:3
tantis signis et prodigiis utitur, ut miraculorum potentia quasi quodam ignis lumine resplendere videatur. Quia ergo commotum caput illius miraeulis clarescere nititur, recte ejus sternutatio splendor ignis vocatur.
he uses such signs and prodigies that by the power of his miracles he seems to shine forth as with a certain light of fire. Since therefore his shaken head strives to grow bright with miracles, rightly is his sneezing called 'the splendour of fire.' For in this—that he moves himself to persecute the just—he shines before the eyes of the reprobate with the powers of signs. And because the wise of this world cleave to his tyranny, and by their counsels he carries out all the depravity that he contrives, rightly is it subjoined:
