279:1
I bid. Et de humo non egredietur dolor. 14. Per occulta merita mentium, aperta prodeunt flagella poenarum. Dolor namque quasi de humo f egreditur, cum homo ad Dei imaginem conditus de rebus insensibilibus flagellatur. Sed quia per occulta mentium merita, aperta prodeunt flagella poenarum, et de humo dolor non egreditur, quoniam sensus nostri malitia exigit ut a rebus insensibilibus feriatur. Ecce enim cernimus quod ad correptionem nostram exspectatus imber arente terra suspenditur, et a ca- liginosus aer inardescente sole siccatur; mare procellis tumescentibus saevit, et alios ad transmeandum su- sceptos intercipit, aliis desideratum iter erecta in cumulum unda b contradicit;
同節:「愁苦也不是從土中生出。」第十四,藉著人心隱藏的功過,刑罰公開的鞭打便顯出來。因為愁苦彷彿是從土中生出,就是當按神形像受造的人被無知覺之物所鞭打之時。但因為藉著人心隱藏的功過,刑罰公開的鞭打便顯出來,所以愁苦並非從土中生出,既因我們感官的惡念要求它被無知覺之物擊打。因為看哪,我們看見為著我們的懲治,所盼望的雨被扣住不降在乾旱的地上,昏暗的空氣因日頭炎熱而乾涸;海因洶湧的風暴而怒號,攔阻它所接納的一些渡海之人,又以它高聳成堆的波浪,向另一些人拒絕他們所渴望的航程;
Same verse. 'And out of the ground shall no sorrow spring.' 14. Through the hidden merits of minds, the open scourges of punishments come forth. For sorrow as it were springs out of the ground, when man, created in the image of God, is scourged by insensible things. But because through the hidden merits of minds the open scourges of punishments come forth, sorrow does not spring out of the ground, since the malice of our sense demands that it be struck by insensible things. For behold, we perceive that, for our correction, the awaited rain is held back from the parched earth, and the murky air is dried up as the sun grows hot; the sea rages with swelling storms, and cuts off some it had received for crossing over, while to others it denies the desired passage with its wave raised into a heap;
279:2
the earth not only diminishes the shoots of its fruitfulness, but even consumes the seeds it has received. In all which things, assuredly, is plainly beheld that which a certain wise man testifies of the Lord, saying: 'And the whole world shall fight with Him against the unwise' (Wisdom v, 21). For the whole world fights with the Lord against the unwise, when, in the punishment of the transgressors, the adversity of the elements too does battle. But nevertheless out of the ground sorrow does not spring, because any insensible thing is roused to our affliction by the goad of our own action. Out of the ground sorrow does not spring, because punishment in no way is born of that creature which strikes, but doubtless of that which, by sinning, wrested the force of the blow.
279:3
But it must be greatly taken care of, that when we are afflicted in outward things by the weight of sorrow, we may tend by hope to the things above; so that the mind may come through to the heights, by that same means whereby the outward punishment chastises us. Hence it is also fitly subjoined:
