841:1
7. Omni peccator incredulitatis reus.
7. 'Every sinner is guilty of unbelief.' — Every perverse preacher stands in this world, so long as he lives in an earthly body. But he refuses to believe his own life, because he despises to know true things concerning God. For he would believe his own life, if he thought rightly concerning the substance of his Creator. These things therefore we said above as spoken of any wicked man whatsoever, but suddenly we turned the sense to the preacher of error. Whence it is to be known that we are thus led to the particular in such a way that we are by no means utterly torn away from the general.
841:2
For every perverse man, even if he seem to hold the right faith in the bosom of the universal Church, stands, yet believes not his own life, because the things which he understands by faith concerning the Creator are indeed right, but nevertheless he despises to hold the works of faith; and he is convicted of unbelief, because by his living he is disproved of that which he shows himself to believe. For hence it is said through John: 'He who saith that he knoweth God, and keepeth not His commandments, is a liar' (1 John II, 4). Hence Paul says: 'They profess that they know God, but in their works they deny Him' (Tit. I, 16). Hence James says: 'Faith without works is dead' (James II, 20, 26).
841:3
But amid these things the Creator, by the wondrous dispensation of His counsel, both regards the faults and bestows times of living, so that the longer spaces of temporal life may either, if the man be converted, become a help unto the gift, or, if he be not converted, unto the increase of damnation. Whence it is still further added:
