643:1
I bid.
Ibid.—'And who considereth my patience?' Sought by them with burning desires.—He has expressed the desire wherewith, placed in the flesh, he hastens to be redeemed and to be recalled from the lower regions to the things above. And indeed it belonged to few men to weigh this, that they should know how to think of the labours of the present life or of the subsequent delay after death. Both of which the just, before the advent of our Redeemer, grieved to endure. Wherefore it is rightly said: 'And who considereth my patience?' Indeed there is not lacking one who considers the patience; but when He does not more quickly hear, God is said, as it were, to consider it less.
643:2
For that very redemption of the human race, which came at the end of the world, was believed to be slow by those who went before from the beginning of the world, because for a long span of time they were separated from the recompense of heavenly things—Truth attesting, who says: 'Many prophets and kings desired to see the things that you see, and saw them not' (Luke x. 24). And so, what is now said: 'Who considereth my patience?' the vows of burning desire are laid open. For neither, as we said before, does God not consider the patience of the just, but He is said, as it were, not to consider it, in that He appears less quickly to the vow of desire, and through more prolonged times defers the grace of His dispensation. Let him say, then: Who considereth my patience?
643:3
Because what is short to Him who disposes is long to him who loves. Wherefore, still considering the losses of his own delay, he repeats what he had already foretold, and, about to descend to the lower regions, redoubles the voice of grief, saying:
