V ers. 19. — Terra, ne operias sanguinem meum, neque inveniat in te latendi locum clamor meus. 26. Sanguis ejus Abelis sanguine melius loquitur; hic enim ultionem, ille veniam exorat. — Peccanti homini dictum est: Terra es, et in terram ibis ( Ge- nes. iii, 10). Quae scilicet terra Redemptoris nostri sanguinem non abscondit, quia unusquisque peccator redemptionis suae pretium sumens, confitetur ac lau- dat, et quibus valet proximis innotescit. Terra etiam sanguinem ejus non operuit, quia sancta Ecclesia redemptionis suae mysterium in cunctis jam mundi partibus praedicavit. [ Vet. XII.] Notandum quod subditur: Neque inveniat in te latendi locum clamor meus ( Genes. iii, 19).

Ver. 19.—'O earth, cover not thou my blood, neither let my cry find in thee a place of hiding.' 26. His blood speaks better than the blood of Abel; for this pleads for vengeance, that for pardon.—To sinning man it was said: 'Earth thou art, and unto earth shalt thou go' (Gen. iii, 19). Which earth indeed does not hide the blood of our Redeemer, because every sinner, receiving the price of his redemption, confesses and praises it, and makes it known to whatever neighbours he can. The earth also did not cover his blood, because holy Church has already preached the mystery of her redemption in all the parts of the world. (Vet. XII.) It is to be noted what is subjoined: 'Neither let my cry find in thee a place of hiding' (Gen. iii, 19).

Ipse enim sanguis redemptionis qui sumitur clamor nostri Redemptoris est. Unde etiam Paulus dicit: a Et sanguinis aspersionem melius lo- quentem quam Abel ( Heb. xii, 24). De sanguine Abel dictum fuerat: Vox sanguinis fratris tui clamat ad me de terra ( Genes. iv, 10). Sed sanguis Jesu melius loquitur quam Abel, quia sanguis Abel mortem fra- tricidae fratris petiit, sanguis autem Domini vitam persecutoribus impetravit· Ut ergo in nobis sacra- mentum dominicae passionis non sit otiosum, debe- mus imitari quod sumimus, et praedicare caeteris quod veneramur. Locum enim latendi clamor ejus in nobis invenit, si hoc quod mens credidit lingua tacet.

For the very blood of redemption which is received is the cry of our Redeemer. Whence Paul also says: 'And to the sprinkling of blood that speaketh better than that of Abel' (Heb. xii, 24). Of the blood of Abel it had been said: 'The voice of thy brother's blood crieth to me from the earth' (Gen. iv, 10). But the blood of Jesus speaks better than Abel, because the blood of Abel sought the death of the fratricide brother, while the blood of the Lord obtained life for his persecutors. Therefore, that the sacrament of the Lord's passion may not be idle in us, we ought to imitate what we receive, and to preach to others what we venerate. For his cry finds a place of hiding in us, if the tongue is silent about that which the mind has believed.

Sed ne in nobis clamor ejus lateat, restat ut unusquisque juxta modulum suum vivificationis suae mysterium proximis innotescat. Libet mentis oculos ad dominicae passionis b horam reducere, cum Ju- daei persequentes saevirent, discipuli timentes fuge- rent. Qui enim carne mori videbatur nequaquam Deus esse credebatur. Unde hic apte subditur:

But lest his cry lie hidden in us, it remains that each one, according to his own measure, make known to his neighbours the mystery of his own quickening. It is pleasing to lead the mind's eyes back to the hour of the Lord's passion, when the pursuing Jews raged and the fearful disciples fled. For he who was seen to die in the flesh was by no means believed to be God. Whence here it is fittingly subjoined:
