I bid. — Et mittentes vocabant tres sorores suas, ut comederent et biberent cum eis. 46. Ad convivium virtutum invitandae, spes, fides, charitas. — Cum virtutes nostrae in omne quod agunt, c spem, fidem, et charitatem ciunt, quasi operatores filii, tres ad convivium sorores vocant, ut fides, spes et charitas in opus bonum gaudeant quod unaquaeque virtus administrat. Quae quasi ex cibo vires accipiunt, dum bonis operibus fidentiores fiunt; et dum post cibum contemplationis rore in- fundi appetunt, quasi ex poculo d ebriantur. [ Vet. XXXIV.] 47. Ipsis bonis quae agimus, ad deterius propinquamus. — Sed quid est, quod in hac vita sine quavis tenuissimi contagii inquinatione peragatur?

In the same place. — And sending, they invited their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 46. To the feast of the virtues are to be invited hope, faith, and charity. — When our virtues in all that they do carry with them hope, faith, and charity, then, as sons who are workers, they invite the three sisters to the feast, that faith, hope, and charity may rejoice in the good work which each virtue administers. And these, as it were, receive strength from the food, while they grow more confident in good works; and while after the food they desire to be steeped with the dew of contemplation, they are, as it were, made drunk from the cup. [Old numbering XXXIV.] 47. By the very good things we do, we draw near to the worse. — But what is there that in this life is carried out without any defilement of the slightest contagion?

Nonnunquam namque ipsis bonis quae agimus ad deterius propinquamus; quia dum laeti- tiam menti pariunt, quamdam etiam securitatem gignunt; dumque mens secura redditur, in torporem laxatur. Nonnunquam vero e aliquantula elatione nos polluunt; et tanto dejectiores apud Deum faciunt, quanto apud nosmetipsos tumidiores reddunt. Unde bene subjungitur:
因為我們有時竟藉著所行的善事本身趨向更壞；因為這些善事一面給心靈帶來喜樂，一面也生出某種安逸的自滿；心靈一旦變得安逸自滿，便鬆懈入於怠惰。有時牠們甚至以某種自高玷污我們；我們在自己眼中越是自誇膨脹，在上帝面前便越發卑賤。故此經文恰當地接著說：
For sometimes by the very good things we do we draw near to the worse; because, while they bring gladness to the mind, they also beget a certain security; and while the mind is rendered secure, it is relaxed into sloth. And sometimes indeed they defile us with a certain elation; and they make us the more cast down before God the more they render us puffed up in our own eyes. Whence it is well added:
