2. Against the powers of the devil is set the omnipotence of God, against his machinations, His infinite Wisdom. — Against his monstrous powers indeed he declared: I know that Thou canst do all things; but against his hidden machinations he added: And no thought is hidden from Thee. Whence also Leviathan is at once reproached by Him, saying: For Leviathan hides his counsel without knowledge; because, although against our infirmity we may be concealed by many frauds, yet he is uncovered to us by the holy inspiration of our Protector. Without knowledge he hides his counsel, because, although he may lie hidden from the tempted, yet he cannot lie hidden from the Protector of the one about to be tempted.
Therefore, having heard the strength and cunning of the devil, having heard also the power of our Creator, which both powerfully represses him and mercifully gathers us, we beseech thee, blessed Job, that thou by no means conceal from us what thou dost feel concerning thyself. There follows:
