75. Christo nullus aut hominum aut angelorum comparandus. — Sardonychum, vi! sapphirum, b lapides pretiosos non esse quis nesciat? Et dum multi alii pretiosi sint lapides, qui longe istos æstimatione magmtudinis antecellant, cur sapuhius vel sardonychus potissimum pretiosus non inalus est, cum uterque lapis iste aliorum lapidum comparatione v lissimus sit? nisi ut eos lapides qui pretiosi describuntur, dum pretiosos non esse cognoscimus, in eorum intelligentia abud exquiramus. Sardonychus quippe terra! rubrae similitudinem tenet, sapphirus vero i aeream habet speciem.

75. No one, whether of men or of angels, is to be compared to Christ. — Who does not know that the sardonyx or the sapphire are precious stones? And while there are many other precious stones which far surpass these in estimation of magnitude, why is not the sapphire or the sardonyx especially esteemed precious, since each of these stones is the most worthless in comparison with the other stones? unless it be that those stones which are described as precious, while we recognize them not to be precious, we may seek something else in their understanding. For the sardonyx holds the likeness of red earth, but the sapphire has an airy appearance.

Men, therefore, can be designated in the sardonyx by the red earth, but angels in the sapphire by the airy appearance. For since the sardonyx stone has the appearance of red earth, it not undeservedly designates man, because Adam also, who was first created, is in the Latin tongue named 'red earth.' For those, although they held a great life of justice, yet served carnal propagation. Since therefore it is agreed that they did certain earthly things, they are not undeservedly designated by the sardonyx stone, which, as we said before, holds the appearance of red earth. But by the sapphire, which is of an ethereal colour, we congruously understand the preachers of the New Testament, who, setting aside the desires of carnal propagation, followed heavenly things alone.

Ait ergo quia Dei sapientia sardonycho, vel sapphiro lapidi non confertur, ac si patenter iusinuet, dicens: Ei qui homo inter homines cernitur, nec in antiquis quisquam, nec in novis patribus aequatur, quia ex Deitate habet quod in humanitate quemquam similem non habet. Whence also the prophet, beholding the holy apostles transcend by spiritual ardour all the desires of the flesh, in wonder said: 'Who are these that fly as clouds?' (Isa. 60:8). As if he plainly said: We walk upon the earth, who are still entangled in marriages, and expend the works of the flesh on offspring to be propagated; but these do not walk on the earth, but fly as clouds, who, while they seek heavenly things, touch nothing of earthly desires. He says, therefore, that the wisdom of God is not compared to the sardonyx or the sapphire stone, as if he plainly insinuated, saying: To him who is discerned as man among men, no one among the ancient nor among the new fathers is made equal, because from his Deity he has this—that in his humanity he has no one like him.
