393:1
Nunc itaque simulatores gaudeant, et humana judi- cia se obtinuisse glorientur; despiciatur justorum simplicitas, atque a calliditate duplicium fatuitas vo- cetur; a citius despectus simplicium transit, citius du- plicium gloria percurrit. Unde et apte subjungitur:
Verses 18, 19.—For this is the joy of his way, that others may spring again out of the earth. 86. The manifold punishment of the hypocrite.—As if it were openly said: When the Judge comes, he is by no means acknowledged, but he receives punishments manifoldly, because the more widely he rejoiced in his own iniquity, the more he propagated evils in others also. For he to whom his own iniquity does not here suffice must needs be tormented there for the guilt of another as well. Now, therefore, let the dissemblers rejoice, and glory that they have obtained the judgments of men; let the simplicity of the just be despised, and folly be so named by the craftiness of the double-hearted; the despising of the simple passes more quickly away, the glory of the double-hearted runs its course more quickly. Whence it is also fitly subjoined:
