I bid. — Et non timebis calamitatem, cum venerit. 46. Contra multiformem adversarium pugnantes mul- tiplicius nos parare debemus.—Sancti enim viri quia contra multiformem adversarium se pugnare consi- derant, semetipsos in certamine multipliciter parant. Habent enim contra famem divini verbi pabulum, contra belli gladium, continentiae scutum; contra flagellum linguae, protectionem patientiae; contra exterioris calamitatis damnum, interni amoris adju- torium. Unde miro modo agitur, ut quo eos hostis callidus numerosius tentat, eo circumspecti Dei mi- lites virtutibus ditiores flant.
同上。——災禍臨到時，你必不懼怕。第46段。與那多端的仇敵爭戰，我們當以多方預備自己。——因為聖人既思量到自己是與一個多端的仇敵爭戰，就以多方預備自己去應戰。因為他們有以下裝備：抵擋天主話語的饑荒有其糧食，抵擋戰爭的刀有節制的盾牌，抵擋舌頭的鞭打有忍耐的保護，抵擋外在災禍的損失有內在之愛的援助。因此以奇妙的方式發生這事：那狡猾的仇敵愈是多方試探他們，那謹慎的天主精兵就愈發在德行上富足。

Fighting against a manifold adversary, we ought to prepare ourselves in manifold ways. — For holy men, because they consider that they fight against a manifold adversary, prepare themselves for the contest in manifold ways. For they have against the famine of the divine word its food, against the sword of war the shield of continence, against the scourge of the tongue the protection of patience, against the loss of outward calamity the aid of inward love. Whence in a wondrous way it comes about, that the more numerously the crafty enemy tempts them, the more the circumspect soldiers of God become richer in virtues.
