Verse 9. — Who is ignorant that the hand of the Lord has made all these things? 6. All things proclaim God the Creator of all. — As if he openly said: Whether you seek out those slower in sense, or those who savour of sublime things, or those given to earthly deeds, or those occupied with the searchings-out of this world, all these confess God the Creator of all, and concerning His power they think concordantly, although under it they do not live concordantly. For that which every just man declares even by living, this the unjust man for the most part is compelled to confess of God even by voice alone; and it comes to pass that the wicked, by their attestation, serve the Author of all, whom they resist by their works, because Him whom they have dared to assail by their morals, they cannot deny to be the Creator of all.
Which nevertheless can also usefully be understood according to the mere letter, because every created thing, when regarded, as it were gives the voice of its own attestation — namely that very form which it possesses. We inquire of the beasts, or the birds, the earth, or the fishes, while we consider what things concordantly answer us, that the Lord has made all things; because, while they present their forms to our eyes, they testify that they are not from themselves. For by this very fact, that they are created, through the form they display they render, as it were, a voice of confession to their Creator, who, because He founded all things, disposed also how they ought to be governed. Whence it is subjoined:
