903:1
57. Quarum duritiam emollivi, et superbiam stravit. — Manum quippe ad silicem extendit, quia ad duritiam gentium suæ brachium prædicationis misit.Unde et idem beatus Job passionis suæ historiam praesciens gentibus innotescendam, dicit: Scribantur hæc tylo ferreo in plumbi lamina, e vel certe sculpantur in alice (Job. XIX, 24). CXLIII, 5). Sed montes a radicibus sunt eversi, quia, prædicante taneta Ecclesia, summæ hujus sæculi potestates in adortum omnipotentis Dei ab intima.cogitatione Icecidrerunt.
57. Whose hardness she softened, and laid low their pride. — For she stretched out her hand to the flint, because she sent the arm of her preaching to the hardness of the Gentiles. Whence also the same blessed Job, foreknowing the history of his passion to be made known to the Gentiles, says: 'Let these be written with an iron pen on a plate of lead, or else graven with a chisel in flint' (Job XIX, 24). But whom in this place do we understand by mountains, save the mighty of this world, who swell high on account of earthly substance? Of whom the Psalmist says: 'Touch the mountains, and they shall smoke' (Ps. CXLIII, 5). But the mountains were overthrown from their roots, because, as the holy Church preached, the highest powers of this world fell from their innermost thought into the adoration of Almighty God.
903:2
For the roots of the mountains are the innermost thoughts of the proud. And the mountains fall from their roots, because for worshipping God the powers of the world are cast down from their lowest thoughts. Rightly indeed is hidden thought signified by the root, because by that which is not discerned within, there breaks forth what may be seen without. Whence also in a good sense it is said through the prophet: 'That which shall be saved of the house of Judah shall send forth, and that which is left shall take root downward, and shall bear fruit upward' (Isa. XXXVII, 31). As if it were openly said: In the lowest parts thought is born, that in the highest reward may be rendered. Let it say therefore:
903:3
Ad silicem extendit manum suam, subvertit a radicibus montes, quia din duritiam tendunt sancta prædicatio petiit, superborum altitudinem funditus stravit. Quia vero eos quos a cogitationibus terrenis evacuat donis coelestibus replet, et quos infimis curis exhaurit supernis rigat tluentis, moi subditur:
'She stretched out her hand to the flint, she overturned the mountains from the roots,' because the holy preaching sought those who tend toward hardness, and utterly laid low the loftiness of the proud. But because she fills with heavenly gifts those whom she empties of earthly thoughts, and waters with the streams above those whom she drains of the lowest cares, presently it is subjoined:
