I bid. — Non enim veniet in conspectu ejus omnis hypocrita. 49. Hypocrita Dei conspectum fugit, dum humanis oculis placere cupit — Cum constet quod judex ve- niens agnos ad dexteram, haedos Vero ad sinistram ponat ( Matth. xxv, 33), qua nunc ratione dicitur in conspectu ejus hypocritam non esse venturum, qui scilicet si inter haedos erit, ad sinistram judicis appa- rebit? [ Vet. XX.] Sed sciendum est quod duobus modis in conspectu Domini venimus. Uno quidem, quo hic, peccata nostra subtiliter perpendentes, in ejus nos conspectu punimus, et flendo dijudicamus. Nam quoties conditoris nostri 384 potentiam ad sensum reducimus, toties in conspectu illius stamus.

The same. — 'For no hypocrite shall come before his sight.' 49. The hypocrite flees the sight of God, while he desires to please human eyes. — Since it is established that the Judge, when he comes, will set the sheep at his right hand but the goats at his left (Matt. 25:33), on what ground is it now said that the hypocrite shall not come before his sight, seeing that, if he is among the goats, he will indeed appear at the Judge's left hand? But it must be understood that we come before the sight of the Lord in two ways. In one way, that by which here, weighing our sins subtly, we punish ourselves in his sight and judge ourselves by weeping. For as often as we bring back to our awareness the power of our Creator, so often do we stand before his sight.

Unde recte quoque per virum Dei Eliam dicitur: Vivit Dominus Deus Israel, in cujus conspectu sto ( III Reg. xvii, 1). Alio quoque modo in conspectu Domini venimus, cum in extremo judicio ante tri- bunal ejus assistimus. Hypocrita igitur per examen ultimum ante conspectum judicis venit; sed quia modo culpas suas considerare ac deflere dissimulat, in conspectu Domini venire recusat. Sicut enim justi viri, cum districtionem venturi judicis contemplan- tur, peccata sua ad memoriam reducunt, deflent quae commiserunt, et districte se judicant, ne judicemur; ita hypocritae quo exterius hominibus placent, eo se interius aspicere negligunt;

Hence it is rightly also said by the man of God, Elijah: 'The Lord God of Israel liveth, in whose sight I stand' (1 Kings 17:1). In another way, too, we come before the sight of the Lord, when at the last judgment we stand before his tribunal. The hypocrite therefore comes before the Judge's face through the final examination; but because for now he neglects to consider and bewail his own faults, he refuses to come before the sight of the Lord. For just as righteous men, when they contemplate the strictness of the coming Judge, recall their sins to memory, weep for what they have committed, and judge themselves strictly, lest we be judged; so hypocrites, the more they please men outwardly, the more they neglect to look upon themselves inwardly;

totosque se in verbis proximorum fundunt, et sanctos se esse aestimant, quia sic se haberi ab hominibus pensant. Cumque mentem per verba suae laudis sparserint, e nunquam hanc ad cognitionem reducunt culpae, nunquam con- siderant ubi internum judicem offendant, nihil de ejus districtione metuunt, quia sic se placuisse ei sicut hominibus credunt. Qui si terrorem ejus ad mentem reducerent, hoc ipsum quod in mala intentione po- siti placent hominibus plus timerent. Bene itaque dicitur: Non enim veniet in conspectu ejus omnis hy- pocrita, quia districtionem Dei ante oculos non po- nit, dum placere humanis oculis concupiscit.

他們把自己全然傾注於鄰人的言語，並自以為聖潔，因為他們以為人這樣看待他們。當他們藉著自誇的言語把心思散播出去，卻從不把它帶回對過犯的認識；他們從不省察自己在何處觸怒那內在的審判者；他們絲毫不懼怕祂的嚴厲，因為他們相信自己既討了人的喜悅，也就討了祂的喜悅。但他們若把祂的可畏帶回心中，就必更加懼怕這一件事——即他們懷著惡意卻討人喜悅。所以說得好：「因為沒有偽善者能來到祂面前」，因為他既渴望討人的眼目喜悅，就不把神的嚴厲擺在眼前。

and they pour themselves out wholly upon the words of their neighbours, and reckon themselves to be holy because they judge themselves to be so held by men. And when they have scattered their minds abroad through words of their own praise, they never bring them back to the acknowledgement of fault; they never consider where they offend the inner Judge; they fear nothing of his strictness, because they believe they have pleased him just as they have pleased men. But if they recalled the terror of him to mind, they would fear all the more this very thing — that, set in an evil intention, they please men. Well therefore is it said: 'For no hypocrite shall come before his sight,' because he does not set the strictness of God before his eyes, while he longs to please human eyes.

526:4

Qui si, mentem suam discutiens, semetipsum d in conspectu Dei poneret, profecto jam hypocrita non esset. Se- quitur:

但他若省察自己的心思，把自己擺在神面前，那麼他必然就不再是偽善者了。接著說：

But if, examining his own mind, he set himself before the sight of God, assuredly he would then no longer be a hypocrite. There follows:
