Verses 19, 20. — 'Because breaking in pieces he stripped bare the house of the poor; he plundered it and did not build it up, nor was his belly satisfied.' — He is punished with eternal punishment who did not dispense his own goods; how much more he who plundered another's. Avarice grows by goods obtained and desired, and is not extinguished. — He breaks in pieces and strips bare the house of the poor, who does not blush to despoil also through avarice him whom he crushes through power. He plunders it, and does not build it. As if it were openly said: He who ought to have built it up, plunders it besides. For the Lord, about to come in judgment, is going to say to the reprobate: 'I was hungry, and you gave me not to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me not to drink; I was a stranger, and you took me not in;

nudus, et non operuistis me, et eaetera ( Matth. xxv, 42). Ex qua culpa subjungitur: Discedite a me, maledicti, in ignem oeternum, qui paratus est diabolo et angelis ejus ( Ibid.). Si igitur tanta poena multatur, qui non dedisse sua convincitur, qua poena feriendus est, qui redarguitur aliena abstulisse? Rapuit ergo, et non aedificavit eam, quia non solum de suo nil tri- buit, sed etiam quod erat alienum tulit. Bene autem subditur: Nec est satiatus venter ejus. Venter quippe iniqui avaritia est, c quia in ipsa colligitur quidquid perverso desiderio glutitur. Liquet vero quia avari- tia desideratis rebus non exstinguitur, sed augetur.

For the belly of the iniquitous is avarice, because in it is gathered whatever is gulped down by perverse desire. But it is clear that avarice is not extinguished by the things desired, but is increased.

Nam more ignis cum ligna quae consumat acceperit, accrescit; et unde videtur ad momentum flamma comprimi, inde paulo post cernitur dilatari. Et saepe omnipotens Deus cum avarae menti vehementer irascitur, prius ei permittit ad votum cuncta sup- petere, d et post hanc per ultionem subtrahit, ut pro eis debeat supplicia aeterna tolerare. Unde et subditur:

因為如同火一樣，當它得著可燒的木柴時，便更加旺盛；火焰在似乎一時被壓制之處，稍後卻正是從那裡見它蔓延擴大。全能的天主往往在對貪婪的心靈大發烈怒時，先容許萬事都照其所願充足供應，然後藉著報應將這一切奪去，使它為此必須忍受永遠的刑罰。因此又補充說：

For after the manner of fire, when it has received wood to consume, it grows; and from the very point where the flame seems for a moment to be pressed down, from that same point a little later it is seen to spread wider. And often, when Almighty God is vehemently angered against a covetous mind, He first permits all things to be at hand for it according to its desire, and afterward, by way of retribution, takes them away, so that on their account it must endure eternal torments.
